Fresh off their first ever League Cup win last weekend, St Johmstone still have an outside chance of finishing in the top six when taking on Hibs who are looking good for third spot.

St Johnstone Preview – Can Saints find the win they need which could keep them in with a chance of top six?

St Johnstone might have drawn away to Hamilton on Wednesday night but they will still be basking in the glory of last weekend’s win against Livingston which secured them their first ever League Cup. A goal from Shaun Rooney created history for the Perth men and means this season has been a huge success regardless.

Callum Davidson – who only took over last summer – now will attempt to pull of what looks improbable at this stage, and get his team in a top six finish.

St Johnstone are currently eighth with two games to go before the split. With four points to make up on sixth place St Mirren they have it all to do. However, St Mirren are playing away to Rangers at the same time so there could be a chance to make up ground with Dundee United (seventh) at home to Celtic the next day.
Regardless of what happens elsewhere St Johnstone have to win this game. And with just three home wins all season, that could be easier said than done.

Hibernian Preview – Will Hibs respond after a surprise defeat last week to strengthen their hopes of third place?

Having won four straight, Hibs suffered a surprise defeat at home to Motherwell last weekend which will just put a little doubt in their minds as to their prospects of finishing in third spot. Jack Ross’ men had responded well to a heavy 3-0 defeat to St Johnstone in the semi-final of the League Cup before losing at home to Rangers. Wins over Dundee United, St Mirren, Aberdeen and Hamilton followed, which put them in a strong position to finish third ahead of the Dons.

Last weekend’s result leaves them four points clear but also with a game in hand. So it is very much theirs to lose as it stands.

Hibs are very strong on their travels with nine wins in 14 league games. A loss to Rangers on Boxing Day is their only defeat in their last six away games in the Premiership, a spell which has seen them win four of them. Their only defeats on the road this season have come at Ibrox, Pittodrie and Celtic Park. So they definitely know how to get things done on their travels.

Ross will have to decide whether he brings in top scorer Kevin Nisbet from the cold after last week’s defeat. He’s not played as much following transfer speculation in January.

St Johnstone vs Hibernian Betting Advice

This is the fourth meeting between the teams this season having also played each other in that League Cup clash which St Johnstone done a number on their opponents. It’s been Hibs who have had the upper hand in the league games, though, winning here back in August before the teams drew 2-2 at Easter Road.

Both league encounters have been very close and this one is likely to be the same.

Key Facts – St Johnstone vs Hibernian Betting Tip

  • St Johnstone have to win both of their remaining games and hope results go their way to finish in the top six
  • Despite losing at home to Motherwell last week, Hibs remain four points clear in third with a game in hand
  • This is the fourth meeting between the clubs this season after the Saints beat Hibs in the semi-final of the League Cup

St Johnstone don’t win many at home (just three all season) so it’s hard to have faith in them getting the win they need here to keep their faint hopes of a top six finish alive.

Instead, just as it was earlier in the season here, I’m going for a low-scoring match. Seven of Hibs last nine away games have went under 2.5 goals, as have 12 of St Johnstone’s 15 home matches.
