St Johnstone Preview – Will Hornets make it another away day disappointment for new look Palace?

Callum Davidson’s men may have been disappointed with dropping into this competition having been knocked out Europa League qualification by Turkish giants Galatasaray. The Saints equipped themselves very well over the two legs but were undone by a team with far greater resources and more quality – eventually going down 5-3 on aggregate. Although it was in defeat it was another indication of how competent this group of players are and they would have taken a lot of confidence from both legs, particularly getting a draw in Istanbul.

That was apparent when they travelled to Austria for the first leg of this tie last week and getting another 1-1 draw having taken the lead through Chris Kane. They now know any sort of win will see them play European group stage football for the first time.

Wins have been hard to come by for Saints thus far this season, though. Sunday’s defeat to Dundee United means they still haven’t picked up a win within 90 minutes. Their only victory remains after penalties against Championship side Arbroath. St Johnstone have drawn their other two league matches against Ross County and Motherwell.

Midfielder Ali McCann has been a standout for Saints both domestically and now in Europe. He will be key to their chances of success on Thursday but there is still the chance he will be playing his football elsewhere after the transfer window closes.

LASK Preview – Can Palace get past this stage for the first time since 2018?

LASK have had a very similar start to St Johnstone when it comes to their domestic league. The Linz-based club have won just one of their five league games and drawn three of the other four. Their solitary victory was on the opening weekend of the season whilst their only defeat came at home to Sturm Graz. Those results see them sitting in sixth spot with six points but there needs to be improvement if they are to challenge the top teams.

As has been the case in recent years LASK remain a very functional team. They don’t score many goals but they also don’t concede many. Their games average less than 2.5 goals in the Austrian Bundesliga which is the lowest in the division.

LASK had no such issues finding the net in the previous round of qualification for this competition. They easily defeated Vojvodina 7-1 on aggregate with French striker Mamoudou Karamoko netting a double to take his season’s tally to three goals.

They won the away tie 1-0 and know they will have to achieve a similar result if they are to progress after 90 minutes on Thursday.

St Johnstone vs LASK Betting Advice

St Johnstone have a chance to make history here as they attempt to make the group stages in a European competition for the first ever time. LASK have competed well in the Europa League in recent years but they know they have to turn in a big performance if they are to compete in Europe beyond this match in the current campaign.

The away goal the Perth club got last weekend is not as significant as it would have been in years gone by but it will give them confidence as they approach this match which will be played in front of a full house at McDiarmid Park.

Key Facts – St Johnstone vs LASK Betting Tip

  • St Johnstone suffered elimination from Europa League qualification by Turkish giants Galatasaray
  • LASK reached the group stages of last year’s Europa League and made the last-16 back in 2019/20
  • The winners of this tie will progress to the group stages of the inaugural Europa Conference League

There was nothing to choose between these sides last week and it could be similar here. Five of St Johnstone’s last six games have seen both teams finding the net and the same in six of LASK’s last seven. It looks a good bet here.
