St Mirren were defeated in their opening game of the season but performed well. They face an Aberdeen team who won their first league game but are coming into this off of European disappointment.

St Mirren Preview – Can Saints take advantage of any European hangover that opponents may have?

It was a dramatic summer for St Mirren following their survival via the playoffs last season. Oran Kearney – the man who led them to safety – left the club less than a season in charge. That was less then ideal but the club were quick to react and get Jim Goodwin in as a replacement. It was the obvious choice for two reasons. Not only has Goodwin been one of the most impressive managers in the lower leagues – he’s also a former captain of the club. It was a disaster of a League Cup campaign which seen them fall in the group stage and it looked ominous ahead of their visit to Hibs. Despite losing that game 1-0 there was a lot to take from it. It was the most organised and cohesive they have looked under Goodwin for a start. There were also encouraging signs going forward but it was always likely that the club would look to strengthen the forward areas.

The squad will be bolstered by the permanent signing of Kyle McAllister who rejoins the club he left for Derby a couple of seasons ago. McAllister was on loan for the second half of last season, too, and was pivotal in keeping them up. His creativity and quality will be welcomed by Goodwin as he looks for his team to carry more threat.

Aberdeen Preview – Is this the perfect game for Dons to recover from Europa League defeat?

It’s already been a hectic time of it for Aberdeen this season even though this is only their second league game. Derek McInnes’ team have been competing in the Europa League since the middle of July attempting to make the group stages. Now in the third round of qualification and it’s beginning to look bleak for the Dons. A 2-0 defeat away to Riejka in the first leg means they have it all to do in the return game at Pittodrie on Thursday. That will be a huge game in the context of their season – even this early on.

In domestic matters it was much more positive as Aberdeen defeated Hearts 3-2 last weekend. Having taken the lead they were pegged back in the second half and had to come from a 2-1 from behind to grab an important three points. The manner of that win was telling with the Dons looking more threatening going forward which has been an issue in the past. McInnes will be hoping that the players he has brought to the club can continue making an impact from Sunday onwards. And perhaps building into that massive game on Thursday.

Key-Facts – St Mirren v Aberdeen

  • Jim Goodwin would have taken a lot from his side’s match with Hibs even in defeat
  • Aberdeen won their first league game of the season in a thriller against Hearts but have it all to do in the second leg of their Europa League qualifier
  • Four of the last five meetings between these clubs at Fir Park have ended with both teams finding the net

St Mirren v Aberdeen Betting Advice

Saints would have taken confidence from their performance if not the result against Hibs last weekend. Goodwin will be hoping that his players can use that as platform as they await the visit of Aberdeen. It’s certainly not been a kind start to the campaign for the Paisley club facing two the top six in consecutive weeks. For Aberdeen this is a game they would ordinarily be expected to win without much fuss but coming in between European games makes it more difficult. And that will be what St Mirren attempt to use.

Aberdeen are very good at grinding out wins on their travels, however, and have more options this season than least. With three wins in a row on their last three visits to this ground they can take another three points home north with them.
