St Mirren Preview – Are Saints sent to end frustrating start with a first league win?

Spirts were high amongst St Mirren supporters following two semi-final appearances in the cup competitions and narrowly missing out on a top six finish in the league last season. Saints won all four of their group games in this year’s League Cup as well but it’s been a frustrating spell since. Draws with Dundee and St Johnstone could easily have been games they won whilst a 2-1 defeat at home to Hearts and 6-0 thrashing away to Celtic mean they sit second bottom in the Premiership with only Livi below them.

An early sending off for Alan Power at Celtic Park does provide some mitigation for that result but in truth they were already second best that day. Manager Jim Goodwin would have been happy enough with the response in their next game but knows he needs to find some wins.

The strategy of buying experienced players in this league has not been justified as yet with Curtis Main still searching for his first goal since joining from Aberdeen and Greg Kiltie not really impacting games in a creative sense.

With the Buddies playing high-flying Aberdeen and Hibernian in their next two games after this they will be targeting Saturday as a match they need three points from. Stretching back to last season and it’s just one win from their last nine home league games.

Dundee United Preview – Can United continue their good start to the season with another victory?

Dundee United may have lost last time out at home to Hearts but they have exceeded expectations to date. Tam Courts – undertaking his first coaching job at this level – has led his team to two very impressive victories which sees them sitting in seventh place. The home win over Rangers followed up with a 1-0 success away to Tayside rivals St Johnstone has proven this United team are going to be dangerous when on their game.

A 2-0 defeat at home to Hearts before the international break will keep their feet on the ground, of course, but they will be confident of getting back on track with a result in this game.

They were the lowest scorers in the Premiership last season with 32 goals and although they’ve won half their games in the league to this point they have scored just two goals. With the loss of Lawrence Shankland as well it doesn’t appear as though they are going to be free-scoring.

United have also reached the quarter-finals of the League Cup and they take on Hibernian at Tannadice later on this month. Whilst it’s again an in form opponent it is a home tie and they will be hopeful of making the last four and playing at Hampden for a place in the final.

St Mirren vs Dundee United Betting Advice

Although it’s been contrasting starts for these two clubs a win for the home team would mean there is only one point between them and United. That’s the beauty of this early stage of the season. That said, Goodwin will know his team will be under pressure if they fail to take three points from this game with difficult matches ahead.
There was little between the teams last season. The four meetings seen them win one match each with the other two ending in goalless draws.

Key Facts – St Mirren vs Dundee United Betting Tip

  • St Mirren find themselves second bottom having failed to win any of their first four league games
  • Dundee United have started well under Tam Courts taking six points from their first four matches
  • The teams played four times last season with a win apiece and two draws

I expect this to be another tight encounter. United don’t tend to be involved in high-scoring games – six of their last seven have had two or fewer goals in them. Similarly, four of St Mirren’s last six games have went under 2.5 goals and that’s the selection here.
