St Mirren Preview – Will Saints follow up their excellent win against Celtic and continue good run?

Jim Goodwin’s team come into this match after one of their best results in recent history. Saturday’s 2-1 win away to Celtic was not just significant because of it was their first victory at Celtic Park since 1990, but it was also a deserved three points for a team who are improving week on week. It came on the back of another impressive away victory last midweek when defeating Dundee United 5-1.

Considering both these results came after the huge disappointment of losing to Livingston in the League Cup final it highlights the resilience and determination of this group of players at the moment.

Although they are a team who are usually involved in battling against relegation there is a progression happening at St Mirren this season. They’re 10 points clear of bottom spot and have a game in hand as well so it’s very much about looking up and that involves targeting a top six finish.
An issue that is holding them back from guaranteeing that position is their home form. Saints have won just two of their 10 matches at home in the Scottish Premiership. Contrast that to an away record which has seen them win six of 13 then it’s obvious where they have to find further improvement.

Hibernian Preview – Can Hibs pick up another three points on their travels to keep themselves in the hunt for second?

Another loss in a cup semi-final at Hampden plus defeat at home to Rangers immediately after that meant there was real pressure on Jack Ross and his players to get a result away to Dundee United on Saturday. They duly obliged with a 2-0 victory and that ensures they are now only a point behind Aberdeen in the race for third and six adrift of Celtic in second, although they have played more games than both.

There has been justifiable criticism of Ross in recent weeks after two wins in their last eight games and the style of football has been fairly dull, too.

Like Saints, Hibs best form has come on the road and they actually have the second best away record in the division. The win at Tannadice was their eighth in the league already so the style that Ross is implementing does suit them when on their travels.

One man who missed the game against Dundee United and may well be again from this match is top scorer Kevin Nisbet. Subject to multiple transfer bids, the striker (who only moved to Easter Road in the summer) has handed in a transfer request as a result.

St Mirren vs Hibernian Betting Advice

It’s not inconceivable to think that St Mirren feel they could challenge for a top four spot if they win this game. They may be 14 points behind their opponents but they have three games in hand so three points here would definitely get them believing it is possible.

They will have to do something they’ve failed to do in both meetings so far this season, though, and that’s score a goal against them. Hibs have won 3-0 and 1-0 to date.

Key Facts – St Mirren vs Hibernian Betting Tip

  • St Mirren recorded a 2-1 win away to Celtic on Saturday to move into the top six
  • Hibs recovered from a recent run of poor results to defeat Dundee United – their eighth away win of the campaign
  • Hibernian have taken maximum points against St Mirren this season, including a 3-0 win here back in September

St Mirren have to improve their home form to assure themselves of top six and this is another test of those credentials. Hibs have been good on their travels and even if Nisbet doesn’t play they have a trusted system for these types of games. It could well be one big game too many in such a short space of time for Saints so back the visitors to get another win in Paisley.
