St Mirren Preview – Can the Buddies get back to winning ways after taking just a point from their last two games?

The first international break probably came at the right time for St Mirren who – after starting the season in positive fashion – drew at home to Ross County and lost away to St Johnstone. Despite those slips, manager Jim Goodwin will be content with his team’s position of sixth, having played a game less than three of the teams above them. Having been involved with the battle to avoid the drop in the previous two seasons, expectation was for them to improve.

Goodwin will know it’s still very early in the campaign, of course, and with two of the top three to come in the space of four days it could look very different this time next week.

As we’ve come to expext from St Mirren under Goodwin they continue to be hard to beat and very well organised. They’ve lost just one goal in their first two home games and although losing three away to Rangers, have otherwise picked up where they left off last season.

Where Goodwin has wanted to see them do better is in attack. St Mirren have yet to score more than one goal in a game and it would appear to be unsustainable to continue picking up results when goals are at a premium.

Hibernian Preview – Will Hibs bounce back after losing their first match before the international break?

Big things were expected of Hibs this season, not least because Jack Ross arrived midway through the last campaign and has since had a chance to mould the squad into something like his own. In terms of results they will be pleased in the main having taken 13 points from a possible 18. The one real blip was losing at home to Aberdeen in their latest game which will have been lingering throughout the international break.

Some critics will say that performances have not matched the results but clearly the prolonged break can go some way to explaining that.

Supporters will want to see a more exciting brand of football as the season progresses and there’s no shortage of attacking talent in the squad to facilitate that. Jamie Murphy is the latest arrival from Rangers and the wide player joins the likes of Martin Boyle, Dre Wright, Christian Doidge and Kevin Nisbet as the key options Ross has available. Half of their eight goals scored came in one game and they have failed to score in two of their three home games.

Ross will be aware that if his team are to finish third then he has to find a better balance in his attack.

St Mirren vs Hibernian Betting Advice

This is a homecoming for Ross who not only had a decent career as a player at St Mirren but was the manager when the club returned to the top-flight in 2017/18 and is fondly remembered. Despite that he will be the enemy on Saturday as the hosts attempt to move within three points of their opponents with the win.

Hibs had the upper hand in three meetings between the sides last year – remaining unbeaten and winning two of them.

Key Facts – St Mirren vs Hibernian Betting Tip

  • St Mirren are unbeaten at home so far this season, taking four points from two games
  • Hibs sit second top but lost their unbeaten record when going down 1-o at home to Aberdeen last time out
  • Jack Ross was in in charge of St Mirren when they won promotion in 2017/18

Both teams have been better defensively than in attack this season and that could make this a real grind. There has been a total of three goals in their two home games thus far whilst Hibs’ last four games have seen a total of three goals. Under 2.5 goals looks to be the way to go in this one.
