St Mirren Preview – Can St Mirren respond from narrow recent defeats to get a result that takes them off bottom?
Jim Goodwin may not be panicking at his team’s current predicament but there will be plenty of St Mirren fans who will be. Defeats to Hibernian and Aberdeen in the past week have put them back in the automatic relegation spot and it’s now just one win in six matches and three victories all season. Goodwin will take some comfort form the fact his team have been playing well without getting rewards but that can only go so far. Missing penalties to gain valuable points – as they did on Saturday – will be hugely frustrating, especially for a team who are the lowest scorers in the league.
Goodwin will be well aware his team have to starting picking up points on a more regular basis. For as good as Motherwell have been this season this is till a home game that St Mirren have to be getting something from. After this they face Livingston, Hamilton and St Johnstone. Those three clubs are within a point of each other heading into this and could be pivotal in determining who goes into 2020 bottom of the table.

It was back to winning ways for Motherwell at the weekend having lost to Celtic and Hibernian in back-to-back away games before then. A 4-0 win for them at home to St Johnstone without ever really getting to their best is indicative of how efficient this season. That was their fifth win in eight home games and only the top two have scored more. Stephen Robinson will be looking to this game as the perfect opportunity to get back to winning ways on their travels. They have won three of seven away from home but their most recent was the end of September. Since then it’s three defeats in a row on the road.
With Aberdeen playing Rangers at the same time tomorrow Robinson knows the importance of getting three points here. It would put them level on points with Aberdeen and potentially into third place once again. With some big games to come between now and the winter break that is an obvious objective for ‘Well and they have shown on plenty of occasions already this campaign that they are one of the best sides in the league.
