St Mirren Preview – Will the change of competition benefit Saints as they attempt to halt six straight defeats?
It’s been a trying time for Jim Goodwin and his St Mirren players of late. The Buddies come into the game on the back of six straight defeats and following an agonising last minute loss away to Aberdeen on Friday. There is some consolation to be taken from the performances and how competitive St Mirren have been, but that counts for little in terms of league positions. And they’re currently only off the bottom of the Premiership table courtesy of a better goal difference.
All four of St Mirren’s defeat have been by one goal and they have to try and build off that heading into their next couple of games which are both in the League Cup.
Partick Thistle Preview – Can Thistle return to football with a win and set the tone for their campaign?
One club who are probably envious of St Mirren’s problems at the moment are their next opponents. Partick Thistle are beginning to get ready for the start of the League One season following their relegation from the Championship in somewhat controversial circumstances. This will be the first of three League Cup matches before the league campaign begins and also the first time Thistle play competitive football since the 10th of March.
Manager Ian McCall will be using these games as much-needed preparation for the start of the league. And it’s a division that they will be expected to win with the playing squad they have.

McCall may think he’s still light on bodies but he has a level of player who should be successful in Scotland’s third tier. Brian Graham had started his career at the Jags well with three goals in six matches and his experience will be vital. It should be noted that he was playing in the Premiership this time last season along with defender Ricky Foster.
Thistle’s participation in this competition was ended at the hands of Celtic last season with the eventual winners running out 5-0 victors. That happened to be McCall’s first game in charge.
St Mirren vs Partick Thistle Betting Advice
This is a game where both sides could really be going with a win to lift the mood but for very different seasons. St Mirren have to get their season going again after their run of defeats whilst their opponents are just looking for a positive return to football following all the off-the-field dramas since they last played.
If history is anything to go by then Partick can take confidence from the fact they won 5-0 the last time the teams met in the competition three years ago.
Key Facts – St Mirren vs Partick Thistle Betting Tip
- St Mirren failed to qualify for the knockout stages of last season’s League Cup in disappointing fashion
- Thistle will be playing in the third tier of Scottish football this season following relegation
- The teams last met in this competition back in 2017 – a game that Thistle won 5-0
The team they’re facing may well be of a lower standard than their Premiership rivals but the odds in this game are not reflective of current form or the gap between these sides. Thistle are essentially a Championship side and are capable of getting a result here. The ties will be played to a finish but for the purposes of the bet I’m taking the away side ‘draw no bet’.
