St Mirren look to be finding some consistency and will be looking to continue their good form when struggling St Johnstone travel to Paisley on Wednesday.

St Mirren Preview – Can Buddies continue their strong start to 2022 with another victory?

St Mirren missed out on the top six by the narrowest of margins last season and their aim was to achieve that this time around for the first time. That looked quite forlorn in the first half of the season when they struggled to find any consistency. Jim Goodwin was growing frustrated with that inability but his team have returned from the winter break in excellent fashion and will fancy their chances of sneaking into the top six with other teams around them faltering.

As it stands, the Buddies are currently ninth but only one points behind sixth place Dundee United and also have the advantage of a game in hand. They are one of five teams separated by just two points and all contesting for the same objective.

Saturday’s win away to Hibs was their third win in four matches, following on from victories against United and Aberdeen. It could so easily have been four successive wins had it not been for conceding in the final minute against Motherwell last Tuesday. Considering Goodwin had to let their star player Jamie McGrath leave last week as well it has been an impressive period.

On loan midfielder Connor Ronan has been a catalyst for this turnaround. He’s hit winning goals against both Hibs and Aberdeen and is now on five for the campaign.

St Johnstone Preview – Will struggling Saints extend their unbeaten run to four games?

It has been a long time coming for St Johnstone but last week’s win away to Livingston, combined with other results, has seen them climb off the bottom of the table. That is the first time in a long time and the 2-1 success against Livingston could be the turning point they haven been hoping for. It was a first league win since October and comes sandwiched between a couple of hard fought goalless draws against the Dundee clubs.

One of those Tayside rivals (Dundee) has replaced them at the bottom of the table with St Johnstone now holding a one point lead over their rivals.

Clearly there is plenty of football to play and some of the issues which St Johnstone have faced for much of the season still persist, particularly their lack of goals. It is now seven of their last 10 league games where they have failed to score and their 13 goals for is a league low. Callum Davidson will be happier that his team appear to be defending better.

Their concession of 28 goals is the best in the bottom half of the Premiership and the fifth best in the league as a whole.

St Mirren vs St Johnstone Betting Advice

These battle of the Saints tend to be very tight affairs. with 14 out the last 15 league meetings having two or fewer goals in them. Indeed, that run of games has produced just 18 goals. For the reasons alluded to above, it is probably not a stretch to see that run continuing, especially as six of St Mirren’s last seven league games have also went under 2.5 goals.

This is the third meeting between the teams this season and we are still waiting on a first goal.

Key Facts –  St Mirren vs St Johnstone Betting Tip

  • St Mirren have taken 10 points from their first four league matches of this calendar year
  • St Johnstone moved off the bottom of the table with last week’s win over Livingston
  • 14 of the last 15 meetings between these teams have had two or fewer goals in them

It will come as no surprise that the selection for this game is based around goals. The lack of them in this fixture and earlier meetings is telling and I’m happy to back under 2.5 to click for the 15th time in 16 meetings.
