St Pauli Preview – Will St Pauli get their first win of the season in opening game game ?
St Pauli were disappointing last season and languished around mid-table for the majority of the campaign. The club acted towards the end of the season by appointing the experienced Dutch coach Jos Luhukay. The former Sheffield Wednesday, Stuttgart and Hertha Berlin boss is a good appointment on paper and the hope is he can get the club challenging for promotion again. That may seem some way off based upon last season’s showing, but they have a couple of top six finishes in the past four years.
They got this season off to a decent enough start with a 1-1 draw with Arminia Bielefeld away from home last week. Considering that was a team who they finished level on points with last season, a share of the points on their travels is a solid start. In order to capitalise on that further, a home win tomorrow would make it a very good beginning. And one that will instill belief within the team from an early stage.
Greuther Furth Preview – Can Greuther Furth bounce back after disappointing loss last Sunday?
It’s been something of a mixed bag for Greuther Furth following their return to this level back in 2014. A third place finish the season immediately following that has been their best since but that ended with defeat in the promotion playoffs. In the five years following that the highest they have managed was 8th spot. The last two campaigns have been very disappointing, however, placing 15th and 13th respectively. Like their next opponents, Greuther also changed manager during last season because of these struggles. Their appointment was a much younger choice in the shape of Stefan Leitl. If the former Inglostadt manager needed any further indication of how much of challenge is ahead this season, the 2-0 home loss to Erzgebirge Aue last weekend would certainly have been that.
Considering that was a defeat to a club who they finished above last term, it’s a very concerning start to this campaign.
