St. Pauli Preview – Being back at home a major positive?

Travelling has proven to be a real issue at St. Pauli (11th – W8 D9 L10, GF34 GA36) in 2019-20, and so it continued in Darmstadt on Saturday, slumping to their biggest margin of defeat of the season to lose 4-0 to a team who were only three points better off before kick-off. Thankfully, then, their Millerntor-Stadion will provide the backdrop for this next assignment.

When playing as the home side St Pauli have essentially been a different beast altogether. Just one of their eight victories not coming on their own turf, with only a handful of teams at this level able to better a commendable record at home of W7 D4 L3. A 1-0 win over Nurnberg in their last such fixture, on 17 May, extending their unbeaten home run to five (W3 D2).

In fact, the team nicknamed Kiezkicker are targeting three consecutive home wins for the second time this season, which only serves to highlight the importance of home advantage to St Pauli. Arguably more impressive, though, is the fact just two visiting teams – Karlsruher, in a 2-2 draw, and Greuther Furth, in a 3-1 loss – has managed more than one goal away to the team coached by the former Sheff Wed manager Jos Luhukay.

Heidenheim Preview – Any defeat damaging to promotion hopes?

An important three points were secured last time out at their Voith-Arena, grinding out a slender 1-0 victory against stubborn opponents in the shape of relegation-threatened Wehen. That win, which could have been very different had a late equaliser not been disallowed for the visitors, has kept alive hopes of a surprise promotion to the Bundesliga as Heidenheim (4th – W12 D8 L7, GF35 GA29) continue to stalk the top-three.

However, similar to their upcoming opponents, Heidenheim also have a clear preference for playing at home, albeit less profound, with only four of twelve league wins registered on their travels this season. Yet their away record remains relatively solid – just the five teams collecting more points from said matches than their 16 (W4 D4 L5). Only two sides, meanwhile, plundering fewer goals away from home than their 12, at a rate (0.92) less than a goal per game.

Something of a mixed bag, then, for those looking to support the visitors, whose need to win is arguably a lot greater. Heidenheim will need to significantly improve upon their latest away showing, though, when losing convincingly to Bochum (3-0) on 16 May. Coach Frank Schmidt is certainly capable of getting it right tactically on the road, however: three of four such wins this season coming by the way of 1-0 scorelines.

St. Pauli Vs Heidenheim Betting Advice

The margin for error at the top is minimal, which places a lot of emphasis on winning the remaining fixtures for fourth-placed Heidenheim, who go into Wednesday’s encounter still in with every chance of going up. This does seem a difficult outing at St Pauli, though, whose excellent home record suggests the promotion chasers must raise their game considerably in order to secure the desired result.

St Pauli Vs Heidenheim Key Facts

  • Reliant on home form this season, St Pauli secured seven of their eight 2. Bundesliga victories this season on home soil (W7 D4 L3).
  • Three of the four away wins Heidenheim enjoyed this season finished in a 1-0 scoreline.
  • Heidenheim boast the edge in recent meetings with three wins from the last four (W3 D1), which includes a 1-0 win at home earlier in the season.

St Pauli, who are typically a lot more reliable at home, could end up obliging at reasonable odds here. However, a 4-0 defeat at the weekend won’t have been good for morale. Furthermore, Heidenheim picked up an important win in their last game. They were also 1-0 victors in the reverse fixture on Matchday 11, having now won three whilst losing none of the pair’s most recent four meetings, and are more than competent on their travels.
