What a wonderful scenario there is in this quarter-final match at the Australian Open 2020. On one side you have the former champion Wawrinka who has bounced back from a poor 2019 to battle through some epic encounters.

On the other, there is young German Alexander Zverev who has been pegged as a future Slam champion. But as of yet, he has not managed to live up to expectations in the majors. Is this his time to go further than ever?

Can Zverev stop Wawrinka’s march?

It has been a quiet tournament for Alexander Zverev. At least in terms of the attention that has been on him. He has gone about his business quickly and efficiently. And that is a very good sign for him.

The young German has not dropped a set throughout the tournament yet and he will know that he is facing a veteran player who has been through some long challenges. Zverev has only met one other seeded player so far, Andrey Rublev in the fourth round.

There were no hiccups or stresses for Zverev in that fixture as he took the win in straight sets. The 22-year-old has so far, yet to live up to his potential in the slams. His best efforts have been quarterfinals exits at the French Open. He had never been past the fourth round at the Australian Open prior to this.

There is not a lot of history between the two players, but what there, has gone the way of Zverev. The German leads the way 2-0. The first meeting between them happened in the final of St Petersburg in 2016 and then the following year at the ATP Masters 100 Miami. Both of the matches went to three sets.

Can Stanteh Man pull it out again?

At 34 years old and coming in off a difficult 2019, there was not a lot of pressure or expectation on Wawrinka’s chances at the Australian Open. He won the Australian Open in 2014, one of three Slam titles that he has taken in his career.

The Swiss player has defied some expectations in this draw. He started off with a four-set match in the opening round and was then taken to five sets in the second round against Andreas Seppi. That was a lot of early work put in.

He did get a break in the third round when his opponent John Isner retired in the middle of the second set. That gave Stan the Man a fourth-round draw against world number four Daniil Medvedev.

Wawrinka was the underdog for the match against the Russian, but Wawrinka came racing out of the blocks to take the first set. He was in deep trouble in facing a tie break in the fourth to stay in the match, however. After he had fallen 2-1 down in the match, his confidence looked shot, but he dug into his well of experience to pull it out. But he dug it out that tie break win which fueled him up, and then powered his way to a 6-2 win in the final set.
