It’s a massive game at the bottom end of the Championship on Saturday as two of the bottom six meet. Stoke can leapfrog opponents Charlton with all three points but could slip back into the relegation zone if defeated.

Stoke City Preview – Can Stoke bounce back from first defeat in to move further clear of the bottom three?

Michael O’Neill was appointed manager of Stoke City back in November with the sole objective of steering the club to safety. Now, three months later and they are in a better position but still very much involved in a scrap at the bottom of the Championship. Stoke are two points above the relegation zone and that comes after a run where they have taken 11 points from their last five matches. That in itself is an indication of how challenging O’Neill has found it since taking charge. That improved run of results has, however, seven points between themselves and the bottom two which will be some relief.
O’Neill is under more scrutiny than other managers fighting for survival as he will continue his role as boss of Northern Ireland until their participation in Euro 202 comes to an end. Northern Ireland face a playoff next month.

Stoke’s home form under O’Neill has picked up over the last six weeks and they are unbeaten at the Bet365 Stadium since mid-December. Three wins and a couple of draws in that time will give them confidence they can build on that improvement and pull themselves clear of the bottom three in the coming weeks.
It’s also four clean sheets in five league games at home which – when you consider it was one clean sheet in the 10 previous home matches – is significant progress.

Charlton Preview – Will Charlton build on their first victory in six games to ease relegation fears?

Charlton won promotion to the Championship via the League One playoffs last season and it was always likely that Lee Bowyer’s men would find themselves involved towards the bottom end of this division. With 30 games played the Addicks are four points clear of Wigan who sit third bottom. Last weekend’s win at home to Barnsley was hugely important as it came at the same time Wigan won away to Leeds. It was also Charlton’s first win in six games and their first three points of 2020.
Taking it back further and it’s just two league wins in 18 matches which will be concerning for Bowyer. Fortunately for Charlton they had such a fast start to the league campaign that they have been able to remain outside of the bottom three. In order to keep  it that way they will have to start picking up points more regularly.

Striker Lyle Taylor is bound to have a big influence on whether or not Charlton remain a Championship club beyond this season. Taylor has eight league goals for the season and remains at the club despite interest during the January transfer window. Unfortunately for Bowyer his star striker will be suspended for this match which reduces Charlton’s threat considerably.

Stoke City vs Charlton Betting Advice

This is a crucial game for both clubs in their efforts to stay in the league. The current situation is so finely balanced that a win for Stoke and they would go above Charlton in the table but if they lose then they could end up in the bottom three come full time tomorrow.
Equally for the visitors they know how important a win would be for them here – lifting them five clear of their opponents, but they would likely also be happy with a point and keep the gap as it is.

Key Facts – Stoke City vs Chartlon Betting Tip

  • Michael O’Neill is slowly turning things around at Stoke who have taken 11 points from their last five games
  • Charlton got a much needed victory last weekend and are now four points clear of the relegation zone
  • It was a comfortable 3-1 win for Charlton when the teams bet at the Valley way back in August

Having lost heavily to Derby last weekend this is a game that O’Neill will be targeting for all three points. Their form at home has generally been very good of late and with Charlton failing to win away since August and losing six of their last seven on the road, I’m taking Stoke to get a very valuable three points and another step towards safety.
