Neil Warnock is back in management, taking over at Middlesbrough after the club sacked Jonathan Woodgate earlier in the week. The 71-year-old starts life at Boro with a trip to the bet365 Stadium to take on Michael O’Neill’s Stoke City. The Potters are two points ahead of their guests in the EFL Championship table.

Stoke City Preview – Will the Potters extend unbeaten run?

Stoke City picked up a vital point at Reading in the first game back from the break. After going a goal down early on at the Madejski Stadium last Saturday, the Potters faithful would have feared the worse. However, Stoke hung in there and found their equaliser at the death through Nick Powell.

Michael O’Neill’s men have made themselves hard to beat of late, winning two and drawing three of five since back-to-back defeats to Preston North End and Queens Park Rangers in mid-February.

The Potters have been very strong at home, losing only one of their last nine Championship matches at the bet365. Stoke have won four of their past five on home turf, thumping Hull City 5-1 in their last home match. Before that, Stoke beat play-off chasing Cardiff City 2-0, with an own goal and a Joe Allen strike doing the business.

Stoke still have work to do in the race for survival. The Potters are just two points above 22nd-placed Hull with eight games to go.

Middlesbrough Preview – Can Warnock get off to a winning start?

Neil Warnock, who is a Championship specialist, is the new man in the hotseat at the Riverside Stadium. Jonathan Woodgate guided the club to just nine wins from 38 league games, with the final straw being last weekend’s heavy home loss to Swansea City. Warnock has worked wonders at several clubs, but he could have a real job on his hands at the Riverside this season.

Before the break, Middlesbrough picked up a crucial 1-0 win at fellow strugglers Charlton Athletic, with Paddy McNair scoring the only goal. However, they took a giant leap backwards with a 3-0 home loss to Swansea last time out.

Middlesbrough are above the drop zone on just goal difference. Freefalling Hull slipped into the bottom three last weekend, and their goal difference is slightly worse than Boro’s. No team in the Championship has won fewer games thus far, while they have scored just 37 goals, the fewest in the division.

Stoke City vs Middlesbrough Betting Advice

Warnock has all the managerial experience in the world, but Middlesbrough are well and truly embroiled in a relegation battle in this season’s Championship. The Teessiders could certainly do with maximum points on Saturday, but I can see Stoke securing a crucial home win.

Key Facts – Stoke City vs Middlesbrough Betting Tip

  • Stoke are unbeaten in five, winning two and drawing three
  • Middlesbrough have lost four of their previous six league and cup away matches
  • The Potters have won four of their past five on home turf, scoring 12 times in the process

Middlesbrough came from behind to beat the Potters at the Riverside in December, but I fancy the tables to turn in this one. Put some money on the 2-1 home win at 8/1. Also, check out the decent odds of 2/1 for Stoke to be leading at half time.
