Strasbourg – Scoring prowess allowing Le Racing to dream?

Under former Rennes tactician Julien Stephan, Strasbourg are rolling back the years with some swashbuckling football and enter February firmly in the conversation for a place in Europe next season. The Alsace outfit occupy fourth – a Europa League spot – a point clear of a host of clubs in hot pursuit. Yet they are a mere five shy of third-place Marseille and a shot at the Champions League play-offs.

A recent 4-3 defeat in Bordeux meant they went into the recent winter/international break on something of a low. However this shouldn’t detract from what has otherwise been a productive period for Stephan’s men. Le Racing have only failed to collect maximum points in two of the last seven Ligue 1 games, scoring two or more in every one of these encounters barring the 2-0 home loss to Marseille on 12 December.

Key Stat: That aforementioned Marseille defeat stands out for another reason: it is their sole loss at their Stade de la Meinau since the beginning of October (W4 D1 L1).

Nantes – Canaries flying high after one loss in six?

After the anxiety of last season’s conclusion to the domestic season in France, which saw the club scrape through a relegation play-off to preserve their top-flight status, this season must feel like vindication for those fans whose supports hasn’t wavered even through hard times. Nantes return to action perched in mid-table but knowing a win on Sunday would see them move level on points with fourth-place Strasbourg.

The visitors won’t lack for self-belief. Les Canaris boast an excellent record at this venue, recording five victories across their last six top-flight visits including a hard-fought 2-1 success here last April. Meanwhile, their 4-2 victory at home to Lorient prior to the break made it 13 points from the last 18 available (W4 D1 L1). Losing once – narrowly away to second in the table Nice (2-1) – in more than two months.

Key Stat: Nantes aren’t the most prolific of scorers on their travels, but they are reliable. A total of 12 away goals ranks 13th in Ligue 1 this season, however, they have only failed to score on two of eleven occasions away from home.

Strasbourg Vs Nantes Betting Advice

It was honours even when the sides contested their first Ligue 1 duel of this season last November, a 2-2 draw at Nantes’ Stade de la Beaujoire. The home side took the lead twice but were pegged back both times in what was unsurprisingly an open and enjoyable encounter (xG from that game – Nantes 2.11, Strasbourg 1.97). With both playing with genuine confidence, a repeat of that game cannot be ruled out.

Strasbourg Vs Nantes – Key Facts:

  • There was no separating these sides first time around this season, although it wasn’t for the want of trying on the part of Nantes – Les Canaris having twice led in a 2-2 draw.
  • Nantes have now taken four of the last six against Strasbourg, the former winning last season’s corresponding fixture 2-1 for their fifth top-flight victory in six visits to Stade de la Meinau.
  • Strasbourg have scored 26 goals from just 11 Ligue 1 home games in 2021-22. Nantes have scored in 9 of 11 away Ligue 1 games, netting exactly once in all of the last five.

Strasbourg bring rock-solid form of W5 L2 into Sunday’s contest. Nantes are W4 D1 L1 through their last six, meanwhile. So while separating them could prove troublesome, stalemate it should not. Only PSG, with 46, have scored more in Ligue 1 this season than the 44 of Strasbourg while Nantes, with five away victories in the past six league head-to-heads, are looking to score for the sixth away Ligue 1 game running.
