Strasbourg Preview – Lowly position unfair reflection on performances?

Remarkably, Strasbourg (W2 L9) have navigated eleven rounds of this season’s Ligue 1 campaign without registering a single drawn encounter. Unfortunately, though, this has more often than not resulted in them failing to pick up any points, with their only victories thus far coming against sides currently residing in 13th and 20th, respectively, in the league table in the shape of Stade Brest and Dijon.

Therefore, just a third win of the season would seem a stretch bearing in mind seventh-in-the-table Rennes await next. Yet some of the performances, particularly in defeat, have not always warranted the end result. Last week’s 4-3 defeat away to Montpellier, in which the opening 45 minutes saw six goals as it ended 3-3, being the latest example, generating a staggering 3xG – nearly 0.5 more than their hosts.

In fact, Les Coureurs won the xG battle in each of their previous four Ligue 1 games, despite losing the last three. All were by a solitary goal. So their lowly position is slightly misleading and should be interpreted as such, with recent performances that of a team still very much fighting for the cause. However, they haven’t had much luck against the league’s elite so far, losing 3-2 to both Lyon and Monaco.

Rennes Preview – Early momentum all but evaporated?

Les Rouge et Noir (W5 D3 L3) came into the 2020/21 campaign brimming with enthusiasm. Their third place finish in last season’s truncated Ligue 1 season meant a maiden Champions League appearance for the side from Brittany, who begun like a team who spent the summer anxiously awaiting their opening fixture – a 1-1 draw in Lille. They would win each of their subsequent four Ligue 1 fixtures, however.

Unfortunately, all that euphoria and excitement has subsided to an extent, after a dismal nine-game stretch in league and Europe comprising only one win – 2-1 at home to mid-table Stade Brest – and six defeats. Tuesday’s 2-1 reverse at Roazhon Park to Chelsea in the Champions League providing the latest setback for coach Julien Stephan, whose troops were cruelly denied a morale-boosting draw late on.

Rennes have now lost four matches consecutively, and while two came against a supremely talented Chelsea side, their form in Ligue 1 still makes for unpleasant reading with three defeats from the last four. Their latest two away assignments, domestically, have seen them beaten 3-0 in Paris by PSG, despite matching the Ligue 1 champions, and held to a 1-1 draw by bottom side Dijon.

Strasbourg Vs Rennes Betting Advice

Neither side can attest to having much in the way of positive form coming into Friday’s contest, making predicting a winner far from straightforward. Strasbourg have lost three on the bounce, all by a solitary goal, but did enough in all three to deserve more and have failed to score only twice in eight Ligue 1 games. Meanwhile, Rennes boast one win in six league games, keeping a single clean sheet so far this term.

Strasbourg Vs Rennes – Key Facts:

  • Strasbourg are one of two teams – the other being Stade Brest – who are yet to record a draw in Ligue 1 this season, losing nine of their eleven fixtures so far (W2).
  • After beginning the league season by embarking on a seven-game unbeaten run (W4 D3), Rennes have now tasted defeat in three of the last four (W1).
  • The past four meetings held at Strasbourg have seen a minimum of two goals scored, with Rennes departing with 2-0 victories in each of the last two seasons.

Rennes were beaten to nil in their previous two league games, however, prior to those they had scored in all nine Ligue 1 fixtures, seeing both teams net in eight. Strasbourg boast goals in five of their past seven league games meanwhile, scoring two or more on four occasions. The ingredients are there for a lively meeting at Stade de la Meinau, where the last four between the sides have gone Over 1.5, with two going Over 2.5.
