Preview: Stuttgart and Hannover have been inseparable in recent times, moving between the top two leagues of German football in perfect harmony during the past four seasons. It feels appropriate, therefore, that the pair feature in the very first match of the 2019-20 Bundesliga 2 season. The Mercedes-Benz Arena, home of Stuttgart, is the venue for this all-too-familiar clash.

VFB Stuttgart Preview – Die Schwaben to repeat last season’s hammering?

Although they will have had an entire summer to contemplate the dire consequences for their failures in the previous campaign, the reality will truly set in on Friday when Stuttgart begin another season back in the second tier of German football. The hope, however, is that history repeats itself, as four years ago also seen them demoted from the Bundesliga but subsequently come straight back up the following year as champions.

The reason for their current predicament was a bitterly disappointing performance over the course of last season that seen them only collect enough points to finish in the relegation play-off, which they went on to lose on away goals against Union Berlin. Die Schwaben, to their credit, did rally towards the very end, registering seven points from their final four matches to give them a fighting chance of avoiding the play-off altogether, but it was all too little too late.

If they could start life in the league below as they finished the one above, which was rediscovering ways to compete and picking up points again, then Stuttgart could justify odds of 39/19 with MoPlay about them earning promotion as champions. Home form will also be key. Stuttgart won just seven games all of last season, but the majority of those (6) were earned at their Mercedes-Benz Arena. One of them being their largest win of the entire season – a 5-1 hammering of matchday opponents Hannover in March.

The club were also very busy in the transfer window, bringing in a host of new faces but also losing a few key individuals. None more so than France full-back Benjamin Pavard, who instantly goes from playing in a side relegated to one of champions, after signing for Bayern Munich.

Hannover Preview – Drastic away record cause for concern?

Just like their opponents, Hannover must acclimatise to a whole new environment following their relegation from the Bundesliga last season. Unlike their opponents, though, Hannover didn’t provide anywhere near as much resistance as they finished seven points shy of potential safety to conclude what was a hopeless campaign.

Can they bounce back? They certainly did so on the last occasion the club suffered relegation, doing so as runners-up in 2017. The team nicknamed Die Roten are 9/1 to go one better this time around and clinch promotion as Bundesliga 2 champions. A lot needs to happen for that become a reality, though, with a particular weakness of theirs requiring serious improvement being a woefully poor away record.

One of two sides which failed to record a single away victory during the course of the season, Hannover were feeble opponents on the road. Just one team registered fewer points and conceded with more regularity away from home than Die Roten, and that team finished rock-bottom. Which goes to show the sort of company the club have been keeping.

The one aspect that does differ from their opponents is the transfer window, with Hannover very quiet by comparison. Most of their business did revolve around outgoings, however, which would suggest the team could be even weaker than the one which struggled so badly last term, but also a little more settled.

Stuttgart V Hannover Key Facts:

  • Stuttgart earned six of their seven Bundesliga victories last term in home fixtures (W6 D4 L7 at home).
  • Hannover went the whole of the 2018-19 Bundesliga without registering an away victory (W0 D5 L13).
  • Stuttgart have won only one of the previous seven league meetings (W1 D2 L4), but it was the most recent – a 5-1 hammering at home in March.

Betting Summary

The only real positive to be had from Stuttgart’s previous season was a reasonably strong showing in their home games. The team won just seven times overall but six of those did come at their Mercedes-Benz Arena, where they also happened to score twice as many goals and concede at a more respectable rate. They also won this same fixture 5-1 in March.

Hannover were atrocious on their travels, collecting only five points and failing to win a single game as they dropped down a division with a whimper. Funnily enough they did locate the back of net slightly more often in their away fixtures, but it was marginal and certainly not something to get excited about.

The statistics might be leaning slightly towards a home win but it feels too early to be predicting a Stuttgart victory. A side that produced too many below par performances during the last campaign is likely to be much-changed at the start of a new one. Instead, a safer pick could be goals. Just one of the pair’s previous nine league meetings failed to produce both teams to score. Despite the strong omens, the odds on this particular bet remain healthy.
