German Bundesliga
Pick: Stuttgart to WIN
Odds: 29/20
Bookmaker: Betfair
(All betting odds correct at time of writing: 20th May 2021)

Preview: These teams came up from the second division together last season but only one is assured of another season at this level approaching the final round. There is little chance Stuttgart, in their pursuit of a seventh place finish, go easy though, which could spell trouble for relegation-threatened Arminia Bielefeld.

Stuttgart – Home comforts can boost top-seven claims?

With 45 points after 32 matchdays, the Swabians are not only comfortably clear of the drop in their first season back in the top-flight but have more points at this stage than five of their previous six campaigns in the Bundesliga. This is testament to the work of head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo, who is challenging his side to secure one last win as they look to beat several sides to a seventh-place finish.

Any one of four teams can still finish in seventh, thus securing qualification for the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League next term. For Stuttgart, the task is relatively straightforward: win, preferably by a wide margin, then hope results involving Monchengladbach (away to a Werder Bremen side striving to avoid relegation) and Union Berlin (hosting second-in-the-table RB Leipzig) fall their way.

Matarazzo will have confidence in his team completing their end of the bargain. After a run of two wins in eight (D1 L5), Stuttgart come into the final round boasting back-to-back wins – beating Augsburg (h) and Gladbach (a) 2-1 – for the first time since February. Furthermore, their form at Mercedes-Benz Arena has come on leaps and bounds, recording all five home wins for this season in 2021 (D2 L3).

Arminia Bielefeld – Kramer’s men firing blanks on the road?

This time last season the club were enjoying their procession. Champions of the Bundesliga 2 after finishing a cool ten points ahead of runners-up Stuttgart. Yet whereas the team who joined them in Germany’s top tier has made the transition appear seamless, for Arminia Bielefeld a swift return from whence they came remains very much a plausible scenario heading into the last batch of fixtures.

Perched a point above the relegation play-off, presently occupied by Werder Bremen, there are only two points separating Die Blauen (The Blues) from 17th-placed FC Koln and automatic relegation. Their fate rests solely in their hands, therefore, in spite of them not winning their last three games: a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Gladbach preceding 0-0 and 1-1 stalemates with Hertha Berlin and Hoffenheim.

Bielefeld would taste success when these sides met first time around this season, though, a 3-0 home win extending their unbeaten head-to-head record in the Bundesliga to five meetings (W2 D3). There are little signs that a repeat is on the cards, however, head coach Frank Kramer overseeing no wins from their past four away outings (D3 L1), the last three of which failed to produce even a goal from his charges.

Stuttgart Vs Arminia Bielefeld Betting Advice

As a reminder, the various permutations regarding these teams can be found here. The simple crux of the matter is that both recognise the importance of three points, with Stuttgart aware that anything else would see them miss out on the chance of sneaking into Europe next season and Arminia Bielefeld wary that any slip-up would leave the door ajar for the teams in 16th and 17th.

Stuttgart Vs Arminia Bielefeld – Key Facts:

  • Six positions and 13 points is the difference in the Bundesliga standings between Stuttgart in 9th (W12 D9 L12) and Arminia Bielefeld in 15th (W8 D8 L17).
  • Bielefeld did come out on top when these sides met first time around this season, though, a 3-0 win at home continuing their tidy head-to-head run (W2 D3).
  • Stuttgart are formidable adversaries on their own patch, however, with all five home wins this season coming in 2021. Conversely, Bielefeld are winless in four away (D3 L1).

With so much at stake, a tense and cautious affair wouldn’t be a surprise. Bielefeld are short of goals to begin with, notching none in their past three away encounters, while nine of their last ten league games went Under 2.5 Goals. Stuttgart are more adept, though. In particular here at home where they have scored in nine straight games, a period comprising wins over the sides currently 12th, 13th, 16th and 18th.
