Preview: Back in December Stuttgart did the extraordinary when inflicting Borussia Dortmund‘s heaviest ever home defeat in the Bundesliga. Now, the Swabians have an opportunity to complete a rare league double, something they last achieved in the 2004/05 season.

Stuttgart – Swabians eyeing Europe on back of stellar home form?

Last season’s runners-up from the league below have earned their status as a top-half side at this stage of the campaign, but needed a huge slice of good fortune to bring up win number ten last time out. A late own goal settling matters with Werder Bremen, who were restricted to a meagre 0.38 worth of xG as Stuttgart (W10 D9 L8) sealed a third straight home win by virtue of their first 1-0 scoreline of 2020-21.

That the Swabians are currently enjoying their most productive period of the season at their Mercedes-Benz Arena is fairly unremarkable in itself, however, it comes on the back of failing to win any of their first eight home encounters (D5 L3). They have since won four out of five at their residence in Badem-Wurttemberg, where they will be keen on preserving a six-match unbeaten run when Dortmund visit.

In all but one of those four home victories – versus Hoffenheim, Mainz, Schalke and Bremen – Pellegrino Matarazzo’s men successfully shut out the opposition. The last time they prevented Dortmund from scoring, meanwhile, came in a goalless stalemate at Signal Iduna Park in November 2012. Yet they can be confident of a bold showing at the very least, having triumphed 5-1 at the same venue in December’s reverse fixture.

Borussia Dortmund – Slim top-four hopes hinge on three points?

Last week, in their 2-1 reverse at Signal Iduna Park to top-four rivals Frankfurt, Dortmund (W13 D4 L10) became the first team in the top half of the Bundesliga table to reach the unwanted milestone of ten league defeats. The repercussions of which could be far-reaching, with plenty at stake should the club not secure Champions League for next season – which, at their current rate, looks a grim reality.

Adrien Silva’s late header was a brushing blow for Dortmund’s top-four hopes, which were already hanging by a thread but are now stretched to the seams. Ahead of Saturday’s trip to Mercedes-Benz Arena where they’ve lost only once on their eight most recent visits (W6 D1) in the Bundesliga, the Black and Yellows reside in fifth, some seven points off fourth place Frankfurt with 21 points left to play for.

So while the situation is retrievable, BVB would need to defy the odds but also recent form, having won once in four league games (D1 L2) and only one of the past six on the road (D1 L4), to achieve what would have been viewed as the bare minimum when the season got underway in September. Tuesday’s performance in England, as valiant 2-1 losers to Man City, should have restored some lost belief, though.

Stuttgart Vs Borussia Dortmund Betting Advice

This weekend’s venue holds fond memories for Dortmund who have lost only once while winning six of the last eight Bundesliga meetings at Mercedes-Benz Arena. Whether this is enough inspiration for the team, but also would-be-bettors, to see past the chastening result when these sides met earlier in the season is another matter. A 5-1 Stuttgart victory last December represented Dortmund’s heaviest ever in a Bundesliga home game.

Stuttgart vs Borussia Dortmund – Key Facts:

  • In the reverse fixture in December, Stuttgart would inflict the heaviest Bundesliga home defeat in Borussia Dortmund‘s history when winning 5-1 at Signal Iduna Park.
  • Dortmund boast an ominous record as the visiting side in meetings, though, with one loss across the previous eight such fixtures (W6 D1).
  • Both teams scored in 10 of the past 11 away Bundesliga games involving Dortmund (W4 D2 L5). However, Stuttgart maintained their clean sheet in three of the last five home fixtures (W4 D1).

It is a must win fixture for Dortmund, however, Stuttgart will also view this as another opportunity to strengthen their own case for European qualification. The hosts are also the fresher of the two, with Haaland & Co involved in Europe themselves on Tuesday, and boast a six-match unbeaten run on their own patch with wins in the last three. Conversely, it is four defeats in six away league games for Die Schwarzgelben.
