Stuttgart – Swabians to belatedly land first home success?

For the second time this season, Stuttgart (W5 D7 L6) have lost consecutive matches in the Bundesliga. The promoted outfit were the more dangerous side in last week’s 2-1 loss to south-west rivals Freiburg but seen a dominant second-half display go unrewarded (xG: FRE 1.17 – 2.94 STU). Failing to capitalise on an early lead given to them by top scorer Silas Wamangituka, who struck for the third game in a row.

After a promising start in which they negotiated the opening fourteen rounds with four wins and only two defeats, the 2019/20 Bundesliga 2. runners-up have suddenly found results harder to come by. They have now taken one point from the last nine, having won only once (1-4 vs FC Augsburg) in the last seven league encounters (W1 D2 L3) to leave them seven points above the relegation places in tenth.

If the Swabians are to ultimately retain their top-flight status, improving upon a dismal record here at the Mercedes-Benz Arena is imperative. Pellegrino Matarazzo’s men are one of only two teams, with the other being 16th-placed FC Koln, yet to register a home win this campaign, though have lost just three of eight such matches so far. Meanwhile, all but one of these encounters saw both teams find the back of the net.

Mainz – Can 05ers build on last week’s triumph?

In the four Bundesliga games Bo Svensson has been in charge of since his appointment earlier this month, the Dane has amassed only two fewer points than his three predecessors managed in fourteen games between them this season. That is both a testament to the new manager’s ability to hit the ground running as well as a damning indictment on those running things at the top of the club.

It took the new man at the helm until his fourth match to record his maiden Bundesliga victory as a manager at this level, but what a way to bring up your first. Mainz (W2 D4 L12), who were without a win at home all season beforehand, twice fought back from a losing position to claim a 3-2 win over RB Leipzig. France defender Moussa Niakhate in particularly inspired form, netting the first brace of his career.

That win was only their second of the season and still leaves them with much work to be done, now three clear of bottom side Schalke but with five and seven points to be made up on FC Koln and Arminia Bielefeld, who occupy the relegation play-off and safety, respectively. Meanwhile, their record on the road isn’t ideal – W1 D2 L5 – though just two of eight hosts successfully prevented the 05ers from scoring.

Stuttgart Vs Mainz Betting Advice

In this season’s reverse fixture, played out at Mainz’s Opel Arena on Matchday 2 in September, there was no mistaking who the superior side were as Stuttgart chalked up four goals in a thoroughly resounding 4-1 victory. However, that would end a four match losing streak in this fixture for the Swabians, who have prevailed only twice across the previous six Bundesliga encounters held on their own patch (W2 D1 L3).

Stuttgart Vs Mainz – Key Facts:

  • One of two teams yet to win a home game in 2020/21, Stuttgart are without a win in three Bundesliga games having won once in the last seven league outings (W1 D2 L3).
  • With four points from their past four Bundesliga games (W1 D1 L2), Mainz have collected just two fewer points than in their previous fourteen games of the season.
  • A 4-1 victory on Matchday 2 halted a four-match losing sequence versus Mainz for Stuttgart, who have won only two of the past six league meetings as the home side (W2 D1 L3).

With both teams reliable in front of goal, I am inclined to get a goal bet on side. Seven out of the eight Stuttgart home matches this season seen both teams net, with five seeing three or more goals. That tallies rather nicely with Mainz‘s knack for scoring on the road, doing so in six of eight away contests thus far – including daunting trips to Dortmund, Leipzig and Munich – with Both Teams to Score and Over 2.5 Goals landing in five.
