Stuttgart – Another strong showing on home soil expected?

Going into half-time 2-0 behind in last week’s pivotal clash with Hamburg – pitting two teams in direct competition for promotion against one another – it seemed Stuttgart (2nd – W15 D6 L8) were heading for their third loss in as many games since returning from a COVID-19-enforced break. To then somehow turn it around and win 3-2, netting the decisive third goal during time added on, could prove the catalyst for a strong finish to the season.

Of course, it helped that Stuttgart were playing at home, where results this season have been substantially more improved. In fact, no team has a stronger home record in the second tier this season: W11 D1 L2. The Swabians would unsurprisingly build on the momentum garnered in the second half versus Hamburg, grounding out a 2-0 victory on the road at Dynamo Dresden three days later.

Pellegrino Matarazzo, the Stuttgart coach, is now seeking a third straight win that would keep his team second in the table, with third-placed Hamburg in action 24 hours earlier and able to briefly climb above them into the second of two automatic promotion spots. All Stuttgart can focus on is themselves, though, and ensuring it is business as usual at their Merecedes-Benz Arena.

Osnabruck – Visitors likely to offer up a goal threat?

At Christmas, when German football convened for its annual winter hiatus, Osnabruck (14th – W8 D10 L11) were looking as good a bet as anyone for promotion out of 2. Bundesliga, after reeling off four wins in five games – among them a 1-0 success over Stuttgart – to move five points off third place and the promotion play-off. It has gone massively wrong ever since, however, with relegation suddenly genuine cause for concern.

Last week’s 2-2 draw at home to Regensburg, meanwhile, quickly put an end to any potential momentum to be had from beating Greuther Furth 2-0 on the road three days previous. The latter result a sole win in twelve 2. Bundesliga matches (W1 D5 L6) for Daniel Thioune’s side, whose dire form in 2020 resulted in them sliding to within four points of Karlsruher and the relegation play-off.

Lila-Weiβ are, however, a tough nut to crack on the road this season with only five defeats suffered across their previous fourteen away outings (W3 D6 L5). Moreover, they’ve scored in nine successive away encounters, doing so more than once on four occasions to suggest there is a strong likelihood of the visitors contributing a goal, at the very least, inside Merecedes-Benz Arena.

Stuttgart Vs Osnabruck Betting Advice

Finally assuming control of the second automatic promotion berth, it would be hugely frustrating from a Stuttgart perspective were they then to relinquish it by dropping points in a very presentable fixture. Osnabruck bring one win in twelve – albeit that was in their latest away encounter at Greuther Furth – to Stuttgart, where the hosts boast a formidable record in 2019/20 thus far with 11 wins in 14.

Stuttgart Vs Osnabruck – Key Facts

  • Back-to-back wins now for Stuttgart, climbing into second place. Meanwhile, Osnabruck have taken four of the last six points in a boost to their survival bid.
  • Osnabruck have tasted defeat just 36% of the time away, but that will be put to the test in Stuttgart whose record at home (W11 D1 L2) ranks top in 2. Bundesliga for 2019/20.
  • Earlier in the season it was Osnabruck who would claim maximum points, inflicting a 1-0 loss on Stuttgart on Matchday 13.

This season, Stuttgart are among the strongest teams in 2. Bundesliga, averaging more possession, a higher passing accuracy and more shots per game than any other side. This hasn’t always correlated to them winning matches, however it does emphasise their class in this division. Osnabruck are on a downward trajectory and I expect Stuttgart to make that abundantly clear on Sunday.
