Stuttgart – Swabians looking to double up at home?

Against no other side have Stuttgart (W7 D8 L7) earned more Bundesliga wins against than they have Schalke (42 from 97 games). This in spite of the fact they are winless across all of the previous nine such meetings (D3 L6) having been held to a 1-1 draw when these teams met in Gelsenkirchen on Matchday 6 of this campaign. The Swabians, however, are strong favourites to prevail in this latest renewal.

Last weekend’s hard-fought 1-0 success on the road in Cologne keeps the promoted outfit safely nestled in tenth place in the Bundesliga standings – eight positions and a staggering 20 points better off than rock-bottom Schalke. In addition, figures of 29 points from 22 games represents the club’s best tally at this stage since the 2008/09 season, when they went on to claim a third-place finish.

That is now two wins and seven points collected from their past four league games. It was also another three points added to their already impressive away tally, which accounts for 69% of their overall total. An alarming statistic potentially, seeing as they are back at their Mercedes-Benz Arena on Saturday boasting one win in ten home outings along with the fifth-worst home record (W1 D6 L3) in the Bundesliga.

Schalke – Royal Blues fading without a trace?

The Royal Blues (W1 D6 L15) are enjoying their longest ongoing unbeaten run against a Bundesliga side in this very fixture, avoiding defeat in all of the past nine head-to-head encounters since a 3-1 loss here at Mercedes-Benz Arena in April 2014. Incredibly, they would win there on each of their last four visits. On this particular occasion, though, very few are sticking their necks out and predicting a fifth consecutive triumph.

This is because the team already look a lost cause, now eight points adrift at the bottom of the Bundesliga and nine back from safety with only 12 matchdays remaining. And if morale among supporters and the players wasn’t already at its lowest ebb, losing the final – and perhaps last for quite some time – Revierderby of the season in resounding fashion last time out was possibly breaking point.

Dortmund’s 4-0 victory in Gelsenkirchen extended Schalke’s barren run without a league win to seven (D3 L4), while failing to score in four of the last five, including all of the most recent three. Moreover, they are still the only top-flight team yet to register an away win this season (D4 L6 away from home in 2020/21); scoring fewer goals (7) and conceding more (30) in these fixtures than any other side.

Stuttgart Vs Schalke Betting Advice

That Schalke appear on course for relegation after thirty consecutive seasons in the German top tier is essentially old news, with only the greatest of great escape enough to spare them the ignominy of losing their coveted top-flight status. Most worryingly of all, though, is that they could go down with a whimper. Last week’s Revierderby humbling the latest in a now seven-game winless streak (D3 L4).

Stuttgart Vs Schalke – Key Facts:

  • Eight places and 20 points separate the teams at the start of play. Stuttgart with seven points from the last four league games (W2 D1 L1), Schalke winless in seven (D3 L4).
  • Stuttgart frontman Sasa Kalajdzic brought up his tenth goal of the season last time out, that the fifth scored with his head. No team has conceded more headed goals (15) in 2020-21 than Schalke.
  • However, it is the Royal Blues who have invariably enjoyed this fixture more in recent times: Schalke losing none of the last nine meetings, winning all of the last four away from home.

Desperate for points but also goals, Schalke have netted only three times across their current seven-match winless sequence (D3 L4). Firing blanks in each of the last three. The good news, then, is that Saturday’s opponents Stuttgart boast one win and a single clean sheet from ten home outings thus far. Nevertheless, I cannot foresee anything other than three points for the side eight places and 20 points better off.
