Stuttgart – Swabians seldom beaten on own patch?

Three defeats in four Bundesliga games has put a sizeable dent in the club’s unlikely pursuit of European qualification. Stuttgart (W10 D9 L10) were runners-up in the German second tier last term, finishing a full ten points behind Arminia Bielefeld. However, whereas the latter still have a task on their hands cementing their top-flight status down in 15th, the Swabians are instead basking in the giddy heights of tenth.

Stuttgart are in no danger of being sucked into any trouble, but there remains the outside possibility of sneaking a top-seven finish that would see them turn out in European competition next term. Currently four points shy of seventh-place Gladbach, coach Pellegrino Matarazzo will know his side must improve on a dismal return of three points in twelve if they are to mix it with some of the continent’s finest.

This recent downturn can partly be put down to a tough run of games, having faced last season’s top two, Bayern and Dortmund, recently. The Swabians had been in stellar form beforehand, though, in particular at their Mercedes-Benz Arena where only Dortmund and RB Leipzig emerged victorious in 2021 (W4 D2 L2). However, Saturday’s 2-1 loss at Union Berlin leaves them striving to avoid a third consecutive defeat.

Wolfsburg – Wolves wilting in defence of top-four?

Like their upcoming opponents, Wolfsburg (W15 D9 L5) are verging on a third straight Bundesliga defeat ahead of this midweek round. The Wolves went into April losing just three of twenty-six league games in 2020-21, but having dispatched struggling Koln in rather unconvincing fashion, they would then suffer back-to-back defeats, losing a seven-goal thriller in Frankfurt before a 3-2 loss at home to the champions.

Saturday’s contest with Bayern Munich marked the team’s first loss at the Volkswagen Arena this season. Furthermore, Oliver Glasner’s side hadn’t conceded in any of the five home matches prior to hosting the record German champions. However, an uncharacteristically poor display between the sticks from the usually reliable Koen Casteels made a formidable task virtually impossible.

Those setbacks have proved costly, but not yet fatal. Third-place Wolfsburg still retain a five-point buffer over Dortmund in fifth. However, more dropped points at Stuttgart, against whom they have lost each of the previous three away league meetings, would further increase anxiety – though Glasner can take comfort from only RB Leipzig and Bayern amassing more away points (23/45) this term than his charges.

Stuttgart Vs Wolfsburg Betting Advice

A draw would suit neither team, and it is interesting to note that it has only happened the once across their last eight Bundesliga meetings. Even more fascinating is the fact that none of the last eight meetings produced an away victory, with the home side on the day prevailing on seven occasions. A bad omen, therefore, for visiting Wolfsburg who succumbed to defeat on their last three visits to Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Stuttgart Vs Wolfsburg – Key Facts:

  • None of the previous eight Bundesliga meetings between these sides resulted in a win for the away side, with four of the past five hosts winning ‘to nil’.
  • Stuttgart have lost three of their last four (W1) Bundesliga games, having previously been unbeaten in five (W3 D2).
  • Wolfsburg have lost their past two league fixtures, nearly as many (3) as in their first 27 Bundesliga games of 2020-21.

The last time I covered Stuttgart for a home encounter was in their last such game, a 3-2 loss to Dortmund. I was keen to get them on side then but I am not so sure I want to do the same now. I do feel this will be tight, though, and possibly low-scoring. Stuttgart conceded three times across five home games prior to facing a Dortmund team desperate for the win, while Wolfsburg shipped three in the seven away matches before the recent 4-3 loss in Frankfurt.
