Lithuanian club, Suduva, play host to Swiss side Sion at their Marijampol?s sporto centro stadione in this first leg of the third qualifying round in the Europa League, as the hosts look to register just their sixth home win in this competition.
Suduva finished in third spot after the Championship round concluded, which meant they qualified for the early stages of the Europa League, and following wins over Shakhtyor 2-1 on aggregate in the first qualifying round, and 2-1 in the second qualifying round against Liepaja, they now find themselves in this third round.
But home form in this competition hasn’t exactly been their strong suit as they’ve recorded just one win from their last ten Europa League ties on home soil, and this fixture tonight won’t be an easy one either.
Onto Sion, and they come into the Europa League in the third qualifying round as they claimed the last european qualifying spot in the Swiss Super League at the end of last season, finishing in fourth place.
Two seasons ago, Sion finished second to Liverpool in the group stages of the competition, only to narrowly lose out to Portuguese outfit, Sporting Braga 4-3 on aggregate, but not before they’d frustrated the likes of Rubin Kazan and Bordeaux, along with holding Liverpool to a point at Anfield.
Sion therefore possess a superior pedigree in the Europa League than their counterparts this evening, and I’m expecting them to edge this first leg, despite being away from home.
