The Championship returns this weekend after the international break, and it’s given a chance to teams like Sunderland to re-group following the recent departure of former manager Simon Grayson, with this game against Millwall being Robbie Stockdale’s second game in charge of the hosts.

A recent 3-3 draw with fellow strugglers Bolton Wanderers was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back, and Grayson was dismissed after the Black Cats had made a disastrous start to their Championship campaign. Stockdale’s first game was a tough one, with a north-east derby against Middlesbrough which they lost 1-0, but there were a few positives to come out of the match for Sunderland.

They now return to the Stadium of Light to take on 19th placed Millwall, and it will now be easy to guage the success of Robbie Stockdale’s tenure as his side currently sit bottom of the Championship – the only way is up now.

Visitors Millwall haven’t exactly been firing on all cylinders either though, as The Lions have registered just one win from their last six in the Championship which was a 2-0 home win over beleaguered Birmingham City at the New Den, but defeats to Barnsley, Brentford, Sheffield Wednesday and most disappointing of all, a home loss to Burton Albion means they’re only five points above the relegation zone.

The story gets worse for Millwall when looking at their results away from home too, as they’ve now gone 16 league matches without a win on their travels, with their last success coming again in a win at Birmingham City back in February 2015.

An away record of  0-4-4  3/7 certainly shouldn’t strike fear into the hosts ahead of this Saturday’s clash, and indeed, this gives Sunderland a fighting chance to claim something from this encounter.
