Onto the Championship, and my next pick features two sides that find themselves struggling in the bottom half of the English second tier, as Sunderland take on QPR at the Stadium of Light with both teams still looking for their first home and away wins respectively.
The recent international break may have come at the right time for the Black Cats as they went nine matches without a win, and are now sitting second from bottom in the Championship as a result. They’ve also failed to register a win on home turf so far this season with a poor record of 0-1-4 3/8 thus far.
Sunderland manager, Simon Grayson, will now be under severe pressure for a result here on Saturday afternoon, and may be wondering why he ever left former club Preston North End! Sunderland have lost their last four at home with defeats to Leeds United, Sheffield United, Nottingham Forest and Cardiff City. The tide must surely turn at some point for them.
Visitors QPR haven’t fared that much better in recent times as they make their way up to the north-east on the back of a disappointing five-match run without a win which includes defeats to Middlesbrough and local rivals, Fulham.
Ian Holloway’s men are also still looking for their first away win of the season, and although they possess a solid home record at Loftus Road, The R’s hold a below-par record on the road of 0-2-3 5/9 with defeats at Norwich City, Cardiff City and Middlesbrough.
In fact, QPR’s poor results away from home extend beyond this season as they’ve now gone 12 matches without a win on their travels.
I feel that Sunderland will break out of their recent slump, so why not against QPR who haven’t won away from home yet? Take the handicap as extra insurance though.
