Sunderland Preview – Are Sunderland set for another three points at the Stadium of Light?

No team has played fewer games in the division than Sunderland and manager Lee Johnson will be happy that his team are just one point off top spot in spite of that. It may be Johnson’s first full season at the club but this is Sunderland’s fourth straight year in League One and all concerned will be determined to make it their last. It’s been a really positive start to the campaign and they come into this match looking for a third straight win in the league and a fifth consecutive win in all competitions.

The Black Cats were 4-0 winners away to Crewe on Tuesday which is their biggest victory on the road this year. It takes Sunderland to nine wins in 12 games with just the one draw.

Johnson and his players have been imperious at home with six wins giving them and Wycombe the only 100% records at home in the league. Only Oxford have scored more goals at home whilst Sunderland have the conceded the fewest in front of their own fans.

A key reason for their strong performances to date has been the form of Scottish striker Ross Stewart. Signed from Ross County at the beginning of the year, Stewart has nine goals to his name in the league already. That includes a double in the recent win over Crewe.

Charlton Preview – Will Charlton’s luck change following departure of manager?

As encouraging a start as it has been for their opponents it has been completely the opposite for Charlton. Currently third bottom, they’re only two points above bottom club Doncaster and have won just one of their last eight in the league – that coming against Fleetwood earlier this month, another team struggling towards the bottom. Despite that win they are still four points adrift of Fleetwood having played a game more.

The recent poor run and current league position means Nigel Adkins’ time at the club came to an end this week. Adkins took over when Lee Boywer left in March but a 3-2 home defeat against Accrington Stanley was the final straw and leaves Johnnie Jackson in caretaker charge.

The situation as it stands shows you just how good a job Bowyer done in his time at the club which included getting them into the Championship. They are now in real danger of suffering a second relegation in three years, however, unless there is significant improvement.

Only Morecambe have conceded more goals than Charlton so far this season with 23 allowed in 13 games. They have kept just two clean sheets in the league so far (none since August) so it’s clear where their problems lie.

Sunderland vs Charlton Betting Advice

There is a big gulf between these two teams even though we’re not out of October. Charlton have more recent experience of playing at a higher level than their opponents but they are in dire straits just now and you feel anything they get from this game is a bonus with the recent sacking of their manager.

Sunderland will be confident of extending their winning run at home to seven and keeping the pressure on leaders Plymouth. No visiting team has scored more than one goal and with three clean sheets in their last five at the Stadium of Light it does look an ominous task for the visitors.

Key Facts – Sunderland vs Charlton Betting Tip

  • Sunderland have won all six home games in the league so far conceding just three goals
  • This will be the first match in caretaker charge for Johnnie Jackson following Nigel Adkins’ departure
  • The home team have won just one of their last five meetings with Charlton

It may just be one win in five games against Charlton for Sunderland but this looks an ideal opportunity for them to get the three points and shut out the opposition in the process.
