Sunderland Preview – Black Cats to finally win promotion?

Sunderland missed out on promotion once again last season. They finished fourth in League One but were beaten in the play-off semi-finals by Lincoln City. Nevertheless, Lee Johnson did an excellent job at the Stadium of Light after arriving in December.

Sunderland are the bookies’ favourites to win the League One title this season. They have an extremely capable squad at this level, but this year’s third tier contains several massive clubs. Also among the favourites for promotion are Ipswich Town, Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth – Wigan are also in the mix.

Our betting prediction:
Both teams to score
4/5

After playing Wigan this Saturday, Sunderland face three away games on the bounce. They play Port Vale in the cup before taking on MK Dons and Burton Albion on the road in league action. Can Johnson’s troops get off to a flying start?

Wigan Athletic Preview – Latics to be in the promotion mix this term?

Wigan Athletic had a difficult season last time around, but the Latics stayed up with 48 points to their name, finishing a point above the final relegated team. Leam Richardson was given the job with three games remaining, and the 41-year-old will be hoping to kick on this term.

The fixture list has been tough to Wigan, as they face Rotherham United after travelling to Sunderland. Sandwiched in between is a tough-looking trip to last season’s League One winners Hull City in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

At the time of writing, only Sunderland, Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday are available at shorter odds for promotion. Can Athletic get off to a good start with a positive result at the Stadium of Light at the weekend?

Sunderland vs Wigan Athletic Betting Advice

Sunderland finished in the play-offs, while Wigan narrowly avoided the drop, but the Latics did the league double over the Black Cats last season. Back in December 2020, a Kyle Joseph goal was enough to give Wigan a 1-0 away victory. Then in April, Will Keane and Callum Lang netted in a 2-1 win at the DW Stadium. Prior to last season’s results, Sunderland had won the previous three.

Key Facts – Sunderland vs Wigan Athletic Betting Tip

  • Sunderland finished fourth but missed out in the play-offs last season
  • Last term, Wigan survived relegation by just one point
  • Both teams are among the favourites for League One promotion this term

The pair will be aiming for promotion this year, so this season opener is a huge one for both clubs. Being at home, the Black Cats are the bookies’ favourites. Although we fancy Wigan to give a good account of themselves, our money is going on the Sunderland victory. With that in mind, put a few quid on the home win and both teams to score at 3/1.

Wigan picked up a 2-1 win when the pair last met. This time, we fancy a 2-1 victory for Sunderland, which is nicely priced at 15/2.
