After the disappointing midweek loss, Sunderland will be looking to get back to winning ways this weekend. On Saturday afternoon, Wimbledon are the visitors to the Stadium of Light. Lee Johnson’s side made a blistering start, winning three league and cup games in a row, and the Black Cats are the clear favourites to get the points in this one. However, can the Dons cause an upset against the promotion favourites?

Sunderland Preview – Black Cats to return to winning ways?

Lee Johnson’s Sunderland fell to a disappointing away defeat on Tuesday night. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s in-form Burton Albion got the better of them at the Pirelli Stadium, with Jonny Smith scoring the only goal of the game.

Nevertheless, Sunderland kick-started their season with three league and cup wins in a row. They edged past Wigan Athletic at the Stadium of Light on the opening weekend, and then beat MK Dons by the same scoreline at Stadium MK last weekend. The Wearsiders also won 2-1 against Port Vale in the first round of the EFL Cup.

Our betting prediction:
Both teams to score
4/5

Sunderland will be looking to get back to winning ways after the defeat in Staffordshire on Tuesday. Johnson’s troops are the favourites with the bookies and should get past Wimbledon at the weekend.

Wimbledon Preview – Will the Dons extend unbeaten run?

Mark Robinson’s Wimbledon are unbeaten in all four league and cup matches this term. After a 2-1 win at Doncaster Rovers on the opening weekend, the Dons were involved in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Bolton Wanderers in game two. They also won 1-0 at Charlton Athletic in the cup.

Wimbledon drew again last time out. They dominated the ball and had many more shots, but an injury-time own goal gave Gillingham a share of the spoils at Plough Lane. The Gills had ten men and conceded with five minutes to go, so Steve Evans’ men showed tremendous fighting spirit at the end.

Sunderland vs Wimbledon Betting Advice

When these two teams last met, Sunderland left Plough Lane with a convincing 3-0 win back in January. Charlie Wyke was on fire, scoring a hat-trick. The reverse fixture at the Stadium of Light in December finished in a 1-1 draw.

Sunderland have an excellent record over Wimbledon. Since the Dons were formed in May 2002, the Black Cats are unbeaten in five, picking up four wins and drawing once.

Key Facts – Sunderland vs Wimbledon Betting Tip

  • Sunderland have won four and drawn one of the five meetings
  • The Black Cats have taken six points from a possible nine so far
  • Wimbledon are undefeated in four league and cup matches this term

Wimbledon have been hard to play against this season, drawing twice at home and winning both away games. However, Sunderland have a superb record in this fixture, and home advantage should give Johnson’s boys the edge in this one. We like the look of the home win and both teams to score at 13/5.

Ross Stewart has made a good start to his season, scoring in wins over Wigan and MK Dons. After drawing a blank at Burton, we are backing Stewart to return to scoring ways by netting the opener here (3/1).
