Suriname – Debutants to depart with maiden Gold Cup victory?

CONCACAF Gold Cup’s latest debutants are heading home, but they do so with their heads firmly held high. Suriname may not have secured the sort of positive outcome they would have been dreaming about prior to the tournament getting underway, losing both encounters thus far. But they’ve acquitted themselves well and will surely use this whole experience as a springboard moving forward.

Natio won’t be leaving completely empty handed either. Gleofilo Vlifter, the talented 21-year-old who was recently awarded CONCACAF Nations League top scorer, scored his country’s first ever goal at the Gold Cup – as many as Grenada, in Group D, have so far managed across three editions of this tournament – in their second outing of the tournament. A valiant 2-1 loss to six-time semi-finalists Costa Rica.

With a little more precision, and more composure between the sticks, Suriname would have bagged more than their solitary goal last time. They also deserve credit for regrouping in their opener with Jamaica. The Reggae Boyz were two goals to the good inside half-hour – both speculative but well executed long-range efforts – but were frustrated thereafter, ultimately settling for a modest 2-0 victory.

Guadeloupe – Former semi-finalists to sign off with win?

Gold Cup appearances have been infrequent for Guadeloupe, needing an epic 10-9 penalty shootout victory over Guatemala to book their ticket to a fourth tournament since marking their debuts in spectacular fashion with a run to the semi-finals in 2007. This latest adventure has proven to be far more short-lived, however. Their exit already confirmed prior to taking on the competition’s newest debutants.

This is the second time Les Gwada Boys have not made it beyond the group, after finishing bottom with zero points on their most recent appearance in 2011. On that occasion the group was a formidable one, comprising Canada, Panama and the USA. With Jamaica growing in stature but not the finished article, and Costa Rica looking a fading force, they would have expected more from this summer’s main event.

All that remains now, therefore, is avoiding another last place finish. Performances haven’t been all bad though. Guadeloupe made life extremely difficult for both Costa Rica (3-1) and Jamaica (2-1), netting in both and forcing the latter to find a late winner, after Guadeloupe went ahead early courtesy of an unfortunate own goal.

Suriname Vs Guadeloupe Betting Advice

The cream has risen to the top in Group C, leaving Suriname and Guadeloupe scrapping for pride and third place. It is difficult to split the two. Both acquitted themselves well against Costa Rica and Jamaica. Guadeloupe’s greater tournament experience may give them a slight edge, however, Suriname can claim to have won the most recent encounter between the nations: a 3-2 win at the Caribbean Cup in 2016.

Suriname Vs Guadeloupe – Key Facts:

  • Neither side has secured their first point at this summer’s Gold Cup, with this set to be their final match of the tournament.
  • Suriname showed up well in both games, though, losing 2-0 first time out against Jamaica before a 2-1 loss to Costa Rica.
  • Guadeloupe are the more experienced in terms of Gold Cups (four appearances vs the one from Suriname). Scoring but losing both games so far: 3-1 vs Costa Rica, 2-1 vs Jamaica.

Suriname have played well, in particular in their slender defeat to Costa Rica last time, but I am not sure they deserve to be such a short price favourite for this. Guadeloupe have shown themselves to be very handy once at the Gold Cup, albeit this is their first tournament for a decade, and actually managed something Suriname couldn’t at this tournament – score past both Costa Rica and Jamaica.
