There’s a really interesting Championship game in store on Sunday as joint top Swansea host a Birmingham team who have also had a positive start to the campaign. It should be a lively affair at the Liberty Stadium.

Swansea Preview – Can Swansea build on excellent start under new manager and a third straight win?

The Championship appears as though it’s going to be wide open this season and that makes it even more difficult to predict how certain teams are going to do. One of those who fall into that category is Swansea who are one of several teams under a new manager. And to make it even more uncertain, this is Steve Cooper’s first job in senior football. The start under Cooper has been very positive and it will have got the supporters excited for what’s ahead. The Swan’s first five games of the season have returned four wins and a draw which sees them move to joint top of the Championship and the next round of the League Cup.

There has been plenty of entertainment thus far as well with 11 goals in those five game. There has been a few allowed as well with their only clean sheet coming away from home to Derby.

One of the biggest surprises at this early stage of the season has been the form of Borja Baston. The Spanish striker remains the club’s record signing but has not really delivered. Sent on loan for the past two seasons, Baston has returned a different player. Four goals in his first four league games is a great start. If he can keep up that form it will go a long way to replacing the goals of Oli McBurnie who left in the summer.

Over 2.5 goals

Birmingham Preview – Birmingham have started strongly but are they capable of getting a big result in south Wales?

Just like their opponents, it’s been a season of upheaval for Birmingham and they also have a new man in charge. Little was known about Josep Clotet Ruiz when he came to English football as boss of Oxford United a couple of years ago. It was a surprise to see him given the job, replacing Garry Monk. Initial impressions have been positive, though, as the Blues sit in eighth spot with two wins and a draw from their first four games. The one disappointment has been the 3-0 loss to Portsmouth in the League Cup and losing by the same score to Nottingham Forest in the league. Ruiz will have to find solutions on their travels to prevent such big defeats. And this will be another test of their form on the road.

To their credit, it was a good response by the Birmingham players when defeating Barnsley 2-0 at home in midweek. That was their first win since the opening day of the campaign and it has made such a difference to their league position. If they can strike more of a balance between their home form and on the road, they should have a fairly decent season without troubling the playoffs.

Key-Facts – Swansea v Birmingham

  • Swansea started this weekend joint top of the table with Leeds and have been the surprise package of the Championship so far
  • There has been a lot of upheaval at Birmingham this summer but Tuesday’s win at home to Barnsley has steadied the ship
  • The Swans have won all three at home this season and have scored eight goals in the process

Swansea v Birmingham Betting Advice

It’s been an excellent start to the season for Swansea and one that has probably surpassed expectations. Birmingham will also be pleased with how things have went so far but their away form is a worry already and they will be up against an attack that is bang in form. That attack is led by Borja Baston who will relish the opportunities he’s likely to get.

There was nothing to choose between these sides last season with both games ending in a draw. They were very different games, however, with six goals at the Liberty and none at St Andrews. I expect this game to be much more to Swansea’s liking who have won all three of their home games so far this season. It could be another game full of goals but the home team should have too much.
