A real ‘six-pointer’ is up next in the Premier League on Tuesday night with a vital relegation battle between Swansea City and Southampton at the Liberty Stadium with both teams needing all three points in their respective bids to avoid relegation down to the Championship.

The pressure is really on Swansea now as their Welsh counterparts and bitter rivals, Cardiff City, secured automatic promotion back up to the top flight yesterday, and after a promising start to manager Carlos Carvalhal’s tenure with The Swans, the home side have now gone seven league matches without a win.

Carvalhal oversaw wins against Watford, Liverpool, Arsenal and Burnley in his first seven matches, but since then his side have captured just one further success which was a 4-1 hammering of West Ham but they come into this important clash having lost their last three on the trot with defeats to Manchester City, Chelsea and Bournemouth.

Swansea’s best chances of survival definitely lie at the Liberty Stadium where they hold a  6-3-8  16/21 record overall, but have suffered just two defeats in their last eight on home turf. Goals have been in short supply for the hosts this season though as they’ve failed to score in 7 of their 17 matches to date, along with 11 matches resulting in under 2.5 goals.

Southampton narrowly missed out on a great opportunity to put some much needed daylight between themselves and the bottom three as they were held to a 1-1 draw away at Everton, with The Toffees scoring a last-gasp equaliser which saw Southampton remain in the relegation mire.

Only goal difference separates them from Swansea City and the Saints are now only two points ahead of West Brom who gave themselves a crucial lifeline on the weekend with a 1-0 win over Tottenham. But back to Southampton, and the south coast side have started to make slow but steady progress under new manager, Mark Hughes.

There was a feeling of ‘here we go again’ as Saints lost their first three league matches under Hughes, but points taken off Leicester City and Everton in 0-0 and 1-1 draws respectively, either side of a 2-1 home win over Bournemouth has given them a chance of Premier League survival. Incidentally, 9 of Southampton’s 18 away matches have resulted in under 2.5 goals with the visitors failing to score in 7 on the road to date.

Goalkeepers, Fabianski for Swansea and McCarthy of Southampton could figure as much as their outfield players this evening, with neither side wanting to take too many risks and lose this one. This may well be a low scoring affair, perhaps even a dour 0-0 draw.
