Swansea and Brentford had very different passages into these playoffs and it will be interesting to see if that has an impact when they clash in the first leg of their playoff semi-final.

Swansea City Preview – Are the Swans set to build on the euphoria of midweek and take a lead into the second leg?

Heading into the final day Swansea required not only to beat Reading but for Nottingham Forest to lose at home to Stoke and the small matter of the five goal differential in Forest’s favour being overturned. Even heading into the last 15 minutes it looked extremely unlikely. However, a set of circumstances that only the Championship can throw up occurred and the Swans now see themselves preparing for a two-legged playoff to go within a a game of returning to the Premier League.

This is Swansea’s second season in the Championship since relegation and the first under Steve Cooper.

Cooper himself is in his first senior head coaching role so it’s something of a surprise that Swansea are in contention for promotion so soon after his appointment. His job is now to utilise the confidence that will be flowing through the squad but bringing it back down to a level that allows them to prepare for two (potentially three) massive games ahead.

There’s also the prospect of an all-Welsh playoff final next month with Cardiff taking on Fulham in the other semi-final.

Brentford Preview – Will Brentford bounce back following two dismal defeats and seeing automatic promotion slip through their fingers?

Defeat against Stoke last weekend appeared to be the big chance that Brentford missed out on in terms of automatic promotion but that was just the beginning of the heartache for Thomas Frank and his players. West Brom’s failure to beat QPR on Wednesday meant the Bees were in with another chance of finishing second but they came up short once again when losing their own game – at home to Barnsley. There has already been accusations of them failing to deal with the pressure.

Frank has to find some way to lift his players and get them over the disappointments of the past week as they are still the favourites to reach Wembley.

The last time Brentford lost two consecutive games in the league was back in August and that gives an indication of how consistently good they have been. That same level of performance has simply not been there in their two most recent matches, however, and you could feel the tension in both defeats.

Frank will point to recent wins away to Derby and most notably Fulham as examples of Brentford’s quality against the best this league has to offer. And that’s what his players need to get back to if they are to achieve their objective of playing in the Premier League for the first time.

Swansea City vs Brentford Betting Advice

The two meetings between Swansea and Brentford during the season both ended in emphatic wins for the visitors but as we all know by now, the playoffs are a completely different competition where the best team don’t always prevail. They’re much more like cup matches than regular season games and there’s no doubt it’s Swansea who come bouncing into these next two games.

Key Facts – Swansea City vs Brentford Betting Tip

  • It was a dramatic final day for Swansea who overcame a five goal differential to finish in sixth spot
  • Brentford lost their final two games of the season – had they won either they would be a Premier League club
  • The Bees won the two games in the regular season by an aggregate score of 6-1

There may have been 11 points between these two teams in Brentford’s favour and they were also superior in both games, but the momentum just appears to be with the home team at the moment. It’s more speculative reasoning than usual but I’m taking them to win and travel to Griffin Park on Wednesday with a lead.
