Sweden Preview – Will the Swedes get the result they need to top the group?

Their style of football may not be to everybody’s liking but Sweden have proven to be effective and have qualified for the next phase with a game to spare. A goalless draw against Spain followed by a gritty 1-0 win against Slovakia has ensured they have qualified for the knockout stage of a European Championships for the first time since 2004 where they were eventually eliminated on penalties by Netherlands.

Whilst it’s been a long time coming in this tournament, Jan Andersson has led Sweden to qualification in both his appearances at a major competition having made it all the way to the quarter-finals of the World Cup three years ago.

Our betting prediction
Poland 1-0 Correct Score
(odds taken 2000 GMT, Monday 21 June)
There are no frills about how Sweden play. The preferred 4-4-2 formation is built on hard work and defensive solidity and it’s been effective at nullifying the threats that Spain and Slovakia have offered in the first two games. Critics would argue that the lack of creativity will be an issue in the next round but Andersson will point to two clean sheets as justification for his approach.
Although qualification is assured Sweden could yet finish third in this group if they lose. That impacts who their opponents will be next up so there is still reason for them to go out and get a result.

Poland Preview – Can Poland get their first win of the championships and take their place in the last-16?

The first two games have not went the way Poland would have hoped but they remain in with a chance of qualification and know exactly what they have to do if they are to join their opponents in the next round. A 2-1 defeat to Slovakia after going down to 10 men had them up against it and when Gerard Moreno was lining up his penalty at 1-0 down in their match against Spain it looked like being an early exit.

Moreno’s miss coupled with another goal from their talisman Robert Lewandowski has breathed life into their campaign and results elsewhere means a win will be enough to see them make it through.

Lewandowski will again be the man to carry the expectation of Poland on his shoulders with the Bayern Munich ace looking to add to his 67 international goals so far. Despite that impressive haul it was just his third goal at a major tournament which is more indicative of the quality surrounding him.

Poland made it through to the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 before losing eventual winners Portugal on penalties. They would be more than happy for a repeat of that this time around as things stand.

Sweden vs Poland Betting Advice

Neither of these teams have excelled in an attacking sense despite having very talented strikers. Sweden’s defensive system has been the difference to date but they were also in better form coming into this competition than their opponents. The Swedes are now unbeaten in their last seven whilst Poland’s only win in their last nine came against Andorra.

Although Sweden and Poland are regular at finals this will be the first time they have faced each other at either a World Cup or European Championships since 1974.

Key Facts – Sweden vs Poland Betting Tip

  • Sweden sit top of Group E having taken four points from their first two games
  • Poland need to win if they are to qualify having managed just one point from a possible six
  • This will be the first meeting of the two nations at a major tournament since the 1974 World Cup

Although Lewandowski and Alexander Isak are the quality players on show the service to them just hasn’t been there often enough this tournament. As such, and although Poland need to win, I expect this will be another low-scoring game so take under 2.5 goals.
