Switzerland and Denmark are no strangers to playing in major international tournaments and both will be hoping that they are present at Euro 2020 – to do that they will need to progress from one of the hardest sections in qualifying.

It took Switzerland until 1996 to qualify for their first European Championships but they have been regular participants since then, making three of the last five with their best ever showing coming at Euro 2016 where they reached the last 16. Combine that with their presence at World Cup finals and it’s fair to say that the Swiss know how to negotiate these qualifiers. This particular campaign got off to a very solid start on Saturday with a 2-0 win away to Georgia in what could well have been a tricky fixture. The victory continued Switzerland’s excellent recent form that seen them also top their Nations League section when up against Belgium and Iceland. The Swiss won three of their four matches including that memorable 5-0 win over the Belgians that seen them secure first place courtesy of a better head-to-head. Vladimir Petkovic (who is now nearing five years in charge of the team) will be pleased to have guaranteed a playoff place courtesy of their Nations League performance, but he will be targeting a top two finish in this group, thus continuing his 100% success rate of qualifying Switzerland for major finals since taking over. In a group that contains both Denmark and the Republic of Ireland that will be testing but this is now a very confident and experienced group of players.

Denmark Preview
Denmark have yet to kick off their campaign and it’s without doubt the hardest game of the section for them to get things started. Like their opponents, this is a squad who have become used to playing in the big competitions and their target is a simple one – another qualification for a major finals. The Danes will be especially hungry to make it through to Euro 2020 having missed out on the last Euros but the recent signs are positive that they can do just that. Similar to Switzerland, Denmark topped their UNL group – albeit in the league below – and have that playoff place secured. Within their group were the Republic of Ireland who they also faced in the playoff for the 2018 World Cup and will be relatively confident that they should have that opponent’s measure. The focus is very much on Tuesday though and trying to start their campaign with some points. Having not had a game on matchday one it was friendly action for Age Hareide’s men as they faced Kosovo in a game that finished 2-2. It was an experimental team that started that came but you can expect a much more familiar eleven to take the field in Basel.

Switzerland and Denmark will be the popular choices to qualify from this group but the Republic are dangerous and looking to take advantage of any slip-ups from the top two seeds. The Swiss have built their recent success in these qualifying groups on excellent home form, evidenced by their last defeat at home in a competitive match coming back in 2014. Denmark came as close as anyone to knocking Croatia out on their route to the World Cup final last year and have quality players throughout their squad so will fancy their chances of getting a result on Tuesday.
Neither of these teams are in the habit of losing many games which suggests this is going to be high-quality game with little to choose between them. With such a dominant home record to their advantage, the Swiss will be hopeful of making it count and targeting this game as one they should be taking three points from. Denmark have lost to the likes of Poland, Sweden and Portugal on their travels in recent campaigns and it may be they have to play second best in this one as well.
