Preview: Those awake bright and early on a Sunday will be able to catch some Australian A-League action on BT Sport between Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory. Last season there were only two points separating them in the league, with both enjoying strong campaigns in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Will the final scoreline reflect such on Sunday?

Sydney FC Preview – Excellent home form to continue?

Missing out on the A-League Premiers title in 2018/19, which is awarded to the club who finishes the regular season with the best record, runners-up Sydney FC would use that as motivation in the A-League Grand Finals. Their fourth such title was secured after dismantling Melbourne Victory 6-1 in the semi-finals en route to overcoming the regular season champions, Perth Glory, on penalties in the final.

On the back of last season’s exploits, coupled with some useful additions to their playing squad in the off-season (notably poaching Kosta Barbarouses from their matchday opponents), expectations are understandably high for the 2019/20 campaign which has already begun promisingly, with three wins from their opening four matches. The only blip a narrow loss to local rivals Western Sydney (1-0), otherwise beating Adelaide United (2-3), Wellington (2-1) and Newcastle Jets (4-1).

Sydney FC (4th – W3 D0 L1, GF9 GA5) are two from two at home for this season, as you can see above, as they continue to stamp their authority on opposing teams whenever taking to the field at their Netstrata Jubilee Stadium. The last side to beat them on their own turf in an A-League environment being the other Melbourne outfit, Melbourne City, back in March – their only home loss in a stunning thirteen game sequence which boasts of eleven victories (W11 D1 L1 in last 13 home league games).

Melbourne Victory Preview – Indifferent start undermining Victory credentials?

The club must be sick of the sight of this weekend’s opponents, Sydney FC. Not only would Melbourne Victory conclude the regular part of last season two points behind said rivals in third, The Victory would also be on the receiving of a 6-1 mauling to them in the semi-final of the A-League Grand Finals. Then, for good measure, lost their star player and leading scorer, Kosta Barbarouses, to them during the recent off-season.

Bearing all this in mind, it should be a very determined and motivated Victory side which heads to Sydney. Yet this is a team who have made a rocky start to the new term, after claiming only one win from their first five league encounters (W1 D2 L2). That solitary success, however, would arrive in their sole away fixture, away to Brisbane Roar (0-1). A typically promising start to their long list of away fixtures.

Typical because only the eventual champions last term (Perth Glory) would register more points on the road than Melbourne Victory (7th – W1 D2 L2, GF5 GA6). Under new management in the shape of German Marko Kurz, they are seeking to mirror an excellent away record that seen them prevail in eight of their thirteen A-League away games in 2018-19 (W8 D2 L3) – one more than they managed at home.

Sydney FC Vs Melbourne Victory Key Facts:

  • Sydney FC have made a strong start to the new league season (W3 L1); they’ve won eleven of the last thirteen A-League fixtures as the home side (W11 D1 L1).
  • Melbourne Victory are not looking as fluent this time around, winning only once in five league matches (W1 D2 L2) although that come from their only away fixture to date.
  • The previous two meetings staged in Sydney were won by the home side, including a 6-1 trouncing in the most recent.

Betting Summary

Sydney FC are aiming to go one better this season, after ending the previous A-League regular term as runners-up. They’ve certainly made an encouraging start, claiming nine out of a possible twelve points (W3 L1), six of which stemming from two home fixtures thus far, versus Wellington (2-1) and Newcastle Jets (4-1). Those wins mean maximum points were registered in 11 of the previous 13 A-League home games.

Melbourne Victory enjoyed a strong league campaign last season before being humbled thereafter in the Grand Finals by Sydney FC.  Keen to avenge that humiliating loss no doubt, Victory appear a team still transitioning under a new manager who isn’t blessed with the same strength of personnel as his predecessor. Just one win from five league games so far (W1 D2 L2) supports this claim.

The Victory were very strong on their travels in 2018-19 and have won their sole away fixture to date. A trip to Sydney is a far tougher proposition though, facing the team who are arguably the best performing side in home games in the league at present. The previous two meetings in Sydney went the way of the home side, both in contests producing over 2.5 goals, and I would be surprised if that wasn’t three on Sunday.
