Sydney FC Preview – Can the champions extend their lead at the top of the table with another victory?

It’s inevitable that Sydney will win their fourth Premiership title as they require just a point from their final five games. That honour will be well received but the real target will be to make it to the Grand Final and retain the championship they won in 2019. That was their fourth such success and they appear to be big favourites once again.

Sydney returned to action with a hard-fought 3-1 win at home to third place Wellington Phoenix on Friday to extend their lead at the top to 11 points courtesy of two late goals.

 

 

The win was important in a number of ways. Sydney’s previous four games had seen them win only once which was their worst run of the campaign. Steve Corica would also have been pleased with how his team were able to go right to the wire in order to get the three points, especially with it being their first game since March. Sydney also fall behind in the match.

Adam Le Fondre scored one of the three goals to take his tally to 18 for the season which is joint-highest along with Jamie MacLaren.

Newcastle Jets Preview – Are Newcastle capable of pulling off an upset to keep faint playoff hopes alive?

Carl Robinson was barely installed as Newcastle’s coach before the A-League took a break and tomorrow’s match will be his biggest test yet since arriving in Australia. The Jets are six points outside the top six and still have faint hopes of finishing in a playoff spot. That objective was helped with three wins in their last four games – signalling a real improvement under Robinson.

Newcastle have four matches left starting with this one and they will feel they have a chance should they take all three points home with them from this game.

It’s away from home where Newcastle have struggled this season. The Jets have won only two off their 11 games on the road and that’s a record which will have to change if they are to clinch sixth place. One of those victories did come under Robinson – a 3-0 win away to Adelaide United. Newcastle have since went down 1-0 away to Brisbane which was their seventh away loss of the campaign.

Scoring goals has also been an issue with just 26 goals in 22 games. When you contrast that with their opponents on Tuesday, it is 19 goals less than Sydney. The Jets also average just one goal a game on their travels.

 

 

It’s a surprise to see Sydney the price they are considering the teams’ respective position and how dominant the home team have been. Whilst the Jets do have a lot to play for I’m backing the home team to win the Premiership in style and record their 10th home win of the season.
