Sydney host Perth Glory on Wednesday with both teams looking for points to finish in the playoff positions, in what is a repeat of the 2019 final.

Sydney FC Preview – Can champions extend their good record over this opponent and improve their chances of a top six finish?

They may have been Grand Final winners in three of the last four years but Sydney FC have a fight on their hands if they are to even reach the playoffs this time around. Steve Corica’s men are currently occupying the sixth and final playoff position but there are a stack of teams lying behind them, waiting to pounce. Western United are the closest, just two points behind and with a game in hand.

Corica will be hopeful that his team’s recent form where they have won three of their last five can be sustained into the final weeks of the regular season, where they have eight games left to play. Sydney come into this match on the back of a comfortable victory away to old rivals Melbourne Victory – their first away win in their last five attempts.

Sydney’s inconsistencies are there for all to see but they won’t be panicking just yet. There is a vast amount of experience in the squad, many of the players with multiple championships to their name.

Despite them being just sixth, Sydney continue to set the standard when it comes to defence. Their concession of 13 goals is the best in the division and if they can find some rhythm in attack then the foundations are there for them to start climbing the table.

Perth Glory Preview – Are Perth able to get a big result which would enhance their own hopes of a playoff spot?

Perth Glory will still be haunted by their defeat on penalties to Sydney back in the 2018/19 season – a campaign where they finished top of the table (eight points clear of the eventual winners), scored the most goals and conceded the least. Their failure to crown that season with the ultimate prize has no doubt left a lasting impact.

Tony Popovic moved on to pastures new following a sixth place finish and elimination in the semi-finals (again to Sydney), being replaced by his assistant Richard Garcia. The former Australian internationalist has found life in the top job challenging thus far as Glory sit in ninth spot and five points outside the playoffs, albeit they do have a game in hand over their opponents.

Perth have won just one of their last 11 in the league and have to find a spark from somewhere if they are to climb into the top six.

Garcia’s men also have to improve their away form which has seen them record only two victories in eight games. And perhaps more worryingly they have the worst away defensive record in the A-League, conceding 19 goals.

Sydney FC vs Perth Glory Betting Advice

These two teams would have had ambitions of finishing in the top two at the beginning of the season but their inability to put together a sustained winning run has cost both. Now, it’s all about getting into the playoffs and hoping their recent experiences of going far will stand them in good stead.

Sydney have certainly had the better of these games in recent years, winning 14 of the last 17 meetings.

Key Facts – Sydney FC vs Perth Glory Betting Tip

  • Sydney occupy the final playoff spot coming into this game having won three of their last five games
  • Glory have the worst away defensive record in the A-League, conceding 19 goals
  • Perth have won only one of their last 17 meetings against this opponent (3-1 in 2019)

When you factor in Sydney are in better form than their opponents and have a real edge against them in recent meetings it’s hard to look beyond a home win in this game. And that confidence increases when you consider Glory’s porous defence on their travels.
