Britain’s Johanna Konta won her first match in the main draw of a WTA event in 2020 on Tuesday. She collected a very good victory over legend Kim Clijsters. Moving on into the second round at WTA Monterrey, Konta will face German underdog Tatjana Maria. Can Konta make more progress?

Konta can build on victory over Clijsters

The relief that will have come for Johanna Konta winning her first match of the year will have been huge. There is a reasonable chance now that she can push on a bit and start building something. That’s one mental hurdle cleared.

Konta took a straight-sets win over Clijsters in the first round of Monterrey on Tuesday. The most impressive part of the game for Konta, was her serve. It has failed her this year, but she brought the heat against the Belgian.

Konta produced an 83% accuracy with her first serves, and her 1st serve points won percentage was at 80%. But the backup was there as well, Konta winning two-thirds of her second serve points. That’s the kind of numbers where she needs to be at consistently.

Granted, she was up against a player in Clijsters, who was playing just her second match back after an eight-year break. There was little threat coming from the serve of Clijsters. But still, progress is progress. This will be the first meeting between Konta and Maria.

 

Can Maria pull off a big upset?

32-year-old Tatjana Maria is ranked 91st in the world currently. Her career-high was breaking just inside the top 50 late in 2017. She isn’t the kind of player who should be troubling Konta.

But then what will give the German hope is having seen Konta lose to world 130 Oceane Dodin recently at the St Petersburg Ladies trophy.

Maria took a win over Britain’s Heather Watson in the first round of WTA Monterrey, who had in turn just won the Mexico Open on the weekend.

Maria had only played four matches in the main draw of WTA events/Grand Slam this season. She won only one of those which was a success over third-seed Maira Bouzkova at the Mexico Open last week.

It is worth noting that Tatjana Maria’s last four losses this season have been against players ranked 89th, 218th, 178th and 299th in the world.

There’s a chance for Konta to go deep in Monterrey this week. She could meet former Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka in the quarters, but that’s not guaranteed at all. The rest of the draw is fairly manageable.

 

 

Just the relief of having broken her duck for the 2020 calendar year will serve Konta well. The fact that it was against a big-name player as well, will have been even better.

A Konta 2-0 option in set betting has to be seriously looked at here. If Konta keeps that serve going from the first round, she can cruise through this match.
