Spanish La Liga 2 Play-Off
Pick: Both Teams to Score NO
Odds: 7/10

Preview: Spain’s top tier awaits the winner of Sunday’s play-off final second leg. Tenerife would inflict a 2-1 loss upon Girona when these teams met at the Estadio de Tenerife earlier in the season, and so will start as favourites with the tie still finely poised after a goalless encounter in Catalonia on June 11.

Tenerife – The most satisfied at the midway stage?

Mission accomplished at half-time in the tie? Content with ceding possession in the first leg, seeing just 31% of the ball, Tenerife could not have made their intentions any clearer. Ensuring the contest was still alive – either through not losing or only marginally – by the time they got back to their hub in the Canary Islands was their objective, to which they deserve credit for achieving that. But it seems a risky approach.

Gambling that they will get over the line in the home leg would make a whole lot more sense if their record on their own patch withstood scrutiny. However, that is patently not the case, having won only twice in eight (D2 L4) at their Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez ground since the beginning of March. Though they would register a 2-1 victory over their play-off final opponents during the regular season, back in November.

Key Stat: Tenerife would keep a clean sheet in six of the last nine games (W4 D2 L3), but in only two of their last eight as the hosts (W2 D2 L4).

Girona – First-leg profligacy could haunt them?

Make no mistake about, that goalless draw in the first leg was certainly a more pleasing outcome for Tenerife than Girona. The latter assumed the role of aggressors in front of a near sell-out crowd at Estadi Montilivi, dominating every meaningful metric – possession (69-31%), goal attempts (16 to 3), shots on target (3 to 1) and even corners (8 to 2) – aside from the one that mattered: the scoreline.

Now, the side from Catalonia must get a result at the same ground in which they suffered a narrow-margin defeat in November. Not that they will lack for belief. Girona can boast wins away to Almeria (first place), Eibar (third) and Las Palmas (fourth) in 2021-22, also rescuing a point late on at runners-up Valladolid. In fact, one of just two losses to top-six opposition on the road was that aforementioned result in Tenerife.

Key Stat: Following the 0-0 scoreline from the first leg, Girona have now conceded once across their past five matches (W2 D2 L1).

Tenerife Vs Girona Betting Advice

The first leg went as expected. Neither side were prepared to risk it all in the first 90 minutes. Girona will rue not making the most of their opportunities, though, mustering six times as many goal attempts without making the breakthrough. So it is advantage Tenerife. Especially in the knowledge they have already beaten Girona at home in 2021-22. Albeit that was another closely fought contest, with Tenerife prevailing 2-1.

Tenerife Vs Girona – Key Facts:

  • In the 2021-22 La Liga 2 regular season, Tenerife completed a league double over Girona, winning home (2-1) and away (0-1) by the odd goal. However, the pair could not be separated in their play-off final first leg, playing out a dour 0-0 draw.
  • That scoreless affair maintained a strong trend in these play-offs. Five out of six play-off matches have ended with Under 2.5 Goals and Both Teams to Score NO as a winning selection.
  • Both these teams are stronger at the back than they are going forward. Tenerife keeping six clean sheets in their last nine matches (W4 D2 L3), while Girona would only concede once in their last five (W2 D2 L1).

Last week we opposed goals and landed an easy winner. I’m not going to deviate from my previous selection then, which was Both Teams to Score NO. That bet returned a winner in seven of Tenerife’s last nine games and in all but one of the past 13 for Girona, whose last five contests have seen at least one nought in the scoreline. Moreover, Tenerife boast six clean sheets in nine games. Girona four in their last five.
