Thun are rock bottom in the Swiss top-flight and in desperate need of points as they look for safety. Lugano are the visitors on Sunday, a team who are drowning in mid-table mediocrity.

Thun Preview – Can Thun find a rare win which could push them closer to safety?
With just 12 points after 20 league games the situation is beginning to look very bleak for Thun and their efforts to stay in the league. Only three league wins all season sees them the same number of points behind Neuchatel Xamax who sit directly above them and in the relegation playoff spot. Those teams will meet at the beginning of March and the challenge for Thun is to remain as close as possible to that rival.
With Sion seven points clear of ninth spot it’s looking increasingly likely that the best Thun can manage is overtaking Neuchatel and taking their chance in the playoff.
Wins have been difficult to come by and that especially applies to their home matches. Thun have managed only one victory from 10 home games. The only encouragement they can take from that is it came in their first game back after the winter break and they hope it will be something to build from.
Unsurprisingly for the team at the bottom of the table goals have been hard to come by and Thun have scored the lowest number in the Super League with 18 in 20 games. Eight of those coming at home.
Lugano Preview – Are Lugano set for a repeat of their comfortable win here earlier in the season?
Having qualified for the Europa League courtesy of a third place finish last season hopes were high that Lugano could do something similar this campaign. Now, having resumed after the winter break, it’s very much looking like a season where they will have to settle for competing to finish as high in the table as possible without challenging the top three or being threatened by relegation.
Currently seventh, Lugano are seven points clear of the bottom two (so not totally safe) and a huge 14 points behind Basel in third place. Italian coach Maurizo Jacobacci was brought in towards the end of 2019 with a view to improving the situation but he has had limited impact thus far.

One of the major issues for Lugano, like their opponents, has been their home form. Despite being 10 points better off they actually have the same number of home wins and scored less goals than Thun. It’s been on their travels where Lugano have picked up most of their points.
Four wins and two draws in 10 away games is more than acceptable but it makes that dismal home run all that more frustrating. Lugano’s only away defeat in their last six games came against current leaders St Gallen.

This may not be the most enticing of fixtures for the neutrals but it’s a game which Thun really need to take something for and build on the result they got in their last home game. Lugano are definitely not safe but you sense they also have enough quality to ensure that they can find a couple of wins that would see them put distance between themselves and the bottom two.
