Torino and Wolves are both desperate to prolong their European campaigns and both would be competitive in the group stage. Only one can progress, though, with the first leg taking place in Italy on Thursday night.

Torino Preview – Can Italians reach group stage for first time since 2014/15?

Torino are only competing in the Europa League qualification due to AC Milan’s ban from European competition this season. It was not until earlier in the summer when Walter Mazzarri’s men were given the opportunity and it’s one they will be looking to take full advantage of – even if they were somewhat unprepared. There has been no shortage of goals in their two ties thus far having faced Debrecen and Shakhtyor. Torino put seven goals past the Hungarians in the second qualifying round to progress with consummate ease. The Belarussian’s put up only slightly more resistance and were beaten 6-1 on aggregate. With the Italian season not having started yet both those ties will have given them much needed practice for what is likely to be a much more challenging two games against Wolves.

This is the first chance Torino have of playing European football since reaching the last 16 of the Europa League back in 2015. They were narrowly beaten by Zenit that season in what was an impressive campaign. The gap between those appearances – and considering that was their first time in the group stage – indicates just how infrequent they are as participants in European football. It will not be one they are keen on giving up on. Between 2014/15 and their two ties this season, Torino remain unbeaten at home winning seven of their nine games.

Wolves Preview – Wolves have had a flawless record in Europe so far this season, can they continue it?

The last couple of years have been up there with the best in Wolves’ history as they continue their ambitious rise through the leagues in what they hope will end as a regular competitor in the Champions League. That’s the aim for the owners and they are definitely going the right way about it. Following promotion to the Premier League they finished in seventh spot in what was a remarkable season. The start to this season suggests it’s going to be another strong campaign for them. Their league form has seen Wolves draw twice against Leicester and Manchester United in what was a challenge start. Especially as they have played two European ties as well.

Like their opponents in the playoff round, Wolves have had absolutely no problem reaching this stage. A 6-1 aggregate defeat of Crusaders eased them into European football before an even more comprehensive 8-0 success against the Armenians Pyunik last time out. It’s been notable from the team selections that Nuno Espirito Santo is targeting this competition. That’s not often the case for English clubs in the Europa League but a European run raises Wolves’ profile some more which is an objective of the club’s owners.

Key-Facts – Torino v Wolves

  • Torino did not qualify for the Europa League but were giving a reprieve following AC Milan’s ban from European football
  • Wolves qualified for the Europa League courtesy of a brilliant debut season in the Premier League last season  and have started this campaign strongly
  • Although both teams have scored plenty of goals n qualifying so far they have been virtually imperious in defence and are very well coached

Torino v Wolves Betting Advice

This is arguably the most attractive tie in the playoff round of the Europa League and it’s somewhat a shame that both of these clubs will not be reaching the group stage. Neither Torino or Wolves are regular competitors in European competition which is why both will be at full strength and going all out to get some sort of advantage. The games each have played so far have been high-scoring but I tend to think that’s more down to them facing inferior opposition. In the eight games (combined) they have played so far in qualification they have shipped just one goal between them.
The organisation of both teams is a real strength and this looks a very even tie. Wolves have shown already in their two league games they do not give much away and I expect this to be another tight match. Under 2.5 goals looks to be a solid bet.
