Preview: Needing to make up ground on the Eastern Conference Play-Off spots, both Toronto FC and Atlanta Utd – 12th and 9th respectively – must surely recognise the significance securing all three points from their contest at BMO Field will have on their respective pursuits for a top-seven finish this season.

Toronto FC – Reds gradually on the mend?

The Reds did us no favours last time out, failing to cover our handicap bet as they fell to a sixth loss in eight MLS matches courtesy of a 2-0 scoreline at Red Bull Arena versus NYRB. In their defence, Toronto held up well in New York and merited more than the ‘to nil’ scoreline implied. However, that did mark a fourth loss without scoring in six league games (W1 D1). As such, they remain 12th of 14 in the Eastern Conference.

Bob Bradley’s men actually won the xG battle against the Red Bulls. Which made it all the more frustrating on our part. But all the less surprising when they went and turned another positive display into a victorious outcome Wednesday, thrashing CF Montreal 4-0 to cruise into the 2022 Canadian Championship final. Bringing up a fifth win in seven (L2) in all competitions at their BMO Field here in Toronto, Ontario.

Key Stat: Toronto FC are without an away win in MLS 2022, producing all four league victories thus far at BMO Field. Meanwhile there has not been a drawn result in any of seven Toronto home games thus far, with the winning margin in the previous six such matches being just one goal (W4 L2).

Atlanta United – Return of club talisman lifting everyone?

The Five Stripes made up valuable ground in the Eastern Conference last time around, climbing to ninth place – only a point shy of Charlotte FC in seventh and an MLS Play-off berth – with a comfortable victory over Inter Miami. Josef Martinez, the club’s talisman and all-time leading scorer, marked the occasion with his first goal for exactly three months following his long-awaited return from a knee procedure.

It continued a period of resurgence for a side now unbeaten in four of its past five MLS contests but picked up just a second win in nine (W2 D3 L4). Now, they embark on a brutal stretch which has them on the road for three consecutive outings, beginning with a visit to Toronto. Encouragingly though, they would secure a maiden win at BMO Field at the fifth attempt (D1 L3 previously) during an ill-tempered clash last October.

Key Stat: Atlanta United would win only one of six MLS away matches (W1 D1 L4) prior to this weekend’s visit to Toronto FC, and none of four since netting a 94th minute winner in a 1-0 scoreline away at DC United at the start of April.

Toronto FC Vs Atlanta United Betting Advice

Despite neither bringing a wealth of consistency into this match-up, we should be in for a competitive showing at BMO Field. A venue Toronto boss the head-to-head count between the clubs, by three wins to one having drawn the first of their five such meetings 2-2 in April 2017, but Atlanta would prevail 2-0 in the latest. Interestingly, none of the previous four meetings, regardless of venue, saw three or more goals.

Toronto FC Vs Atlanta United – Key Facts:

  • After playing out a 1-1 stalemate last October, Atlanta have won two and lost none of the past three MLS meetings between the clubs. The Five Stripes had previously managed one win across the first eight league meetings (W1 D3 L4).
  • None of the four previous encounters between these teams produced three or more goals. However, Toronto would only fail to score once in seven home MLS games this year while Atlanta are enjoying a ten-game stretch scoring at least once.
  • Toronto deserve market favouritism. Bob Bradley’s men have won four out of seven MLS home games in 2022 (W4 L3), compared with the one in six away from home of Atlanta United (W1 D1 L4).

I’m inclined to believe the goals will finally flow in the early hours of Sunday morning (not local time). Toronto are coming off a four-goal victory in midweek and would only fail to find the net in one of seven MLS home games this term. As for Atlanta, they’ve found the target in ten straight league and cup outings, eight of which saw Over 2.5 Goals/Both Teams to Score return a winner, netting two or more in six of the last seven.
