Preview: Home advantage has been decisive in recent renewals of this fixture, with all of the last five going the way of the hosts, including the three previous held at BMO Field. That undoubtedly boosts the prospects of Toronto and their pursuit of what would be a fourth consecutive win in front of their fans.

Toronto – Bradley’s charges in red hot home form?

The Reds helped us to one of three winning selections from the MLS this past weekend, bringing up the three goals we needed by defeating Atlanta Utd 2-1 at BMO Field – the venue for this midweek tussle with Columbus Crew, as well as all five victories in league play this year. They’ve now won three consecutive home games in league and cup, scoring a combined nine times in wins against Atlanta, Montreal and Chicago.

Therefore, having won the three previous meetings between the sides at this venue, coach Bob Bradley will be bullish about his team’s chances of extending a productive run that has seen them lose just once in seven competitive fixtures (W4 D2 L1). However, after coming out second best on xG for the sixth MLS game in seven last time out, there must be a fear their upturn in form will mean-revert soon enough.

Key Stat: The difference from Toronto’s result when at home and on the road are stark. The Reds a formidable W5 L3 at BMO Field, scoring in all but one of these games, but are winless through all eight away outings (D3 L5) thus far, failing to score in three of the last four.

Columbus Crew – Porter has shored up defensively?

In their past three MLS matches, the Columbus Crew haven’t lost. A couple of first-half strikes saw them account for Atlanta Utd, 2-1, on the road before back-to-back low-scoring stalemates with Charlotte and Real Salt Lake, the latter riding high in second place in the Western Conference. The Crew remain outside of the East’s MLS Cup Playoff line, though, in 11th (18 points, W4 D6 L5), five shy of Charlotte FC in seventh.

Caleb Porter has now overseen just two league defeats in eight (W2 D4 L2) – sandwiching successive 2-0 scorelines versus New York City and Los Angeles FC, the current leaders in the East and West respectively, with identical three-game unbeaten streaks of W1 D2. In making themselves difficult to beat though, the Crew have sacrificed a lot going forward, netting one or none in 9 of their past 12 MLS games.

Key Stat: Each of Columbus Crew’s first three games to start the 2022 MLS season went above the threshold for a successful bet on Over 2.5 Goals. However, since then only three of their 12 subsequent league games saw three or more goals.

Toronto Vs Columbus Crew Betting Advice

Backing goals worked out well the last time I previewed Toronto FC, a 2-1 win at this very venue against Atlanta Utd. It marked a seventh home game in eight seeing Over 2.5 Goals, the Reds hitting two goals or more on five occasions in this period. But they were poor last time, creating zero big chances in a contest where a draw would have been a fairer result. And few teams draw more often than their next opponents.

Toronto Vs Columbus Crew – Key Facts:

  • Victory for Toronto FC would represent their fourth in a row in MLS when hosting Columbus Crew, whose previous eight trips to BMO Field have yielded just one win (W1 D1 L6).
  • Both teams enter into Thursday’s game in decent form. Toronto would lose only one of their past four league games (W2 D1 L1) whereas Columbus Crew are currently three-games unbeaten having lost just twice in eight (W2 D4 L2).
  • All but one of eight MLS home games in 2022 for Toronto FC produced Over 2.5 Goals. However, there were five 2-1 scorelines among those eight home games. Meanwhile there were fewer than three goals in five of seven previous Columbus Crew away games.

Portland Timbers (7) and Philadelphia Union (8) are the only MLS teams to have played out more drawn games this term than the Columbus Crew (6), who have drawn fifty per cent of the time across the last eight league games (W2 D4 L2) and includes three of five on the road. Caleb Porter’s side don’t score many away from home, failing to do so in four of the past six, so won’t want to make this an open game either.
