Following recent back-to-back defeats, Tottenham will be anxious to make amends at Wembley Stadium when they meet Real Madrid in Group H of the Champions League on Wednesday night as they look to keep the Spanish champions at bay again, this time on home turf.
Tottenham earned a vital and important point in a 1-1 draw at the Bernebeu on match day three to further push their claim for a top two finish in the group, and if they avoid defeat here again this evening, it would be a fantastic effort for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
However, recent defeats to West Ham in the League Cup and their Premier League defeat away at Manchester United has seen Spurs wobble, and they’ll be sweating over the fitness of striker Kane who is rated doubtful for this evening’s clash.
Real Madrid sit joint top with Tottenham in Group H ahead of match day four, following wins over APOEL and Borussia Dortmund along with a draw against Tottenham, but I can’t help feeling they are more than capable of moving up the gears when necessary, and this evening’s encounter could see the Spanish champions do just that against Spurs.
Real Madrid have won five of their last six away matches in the Champions League with the only aberration during this sequence being a 2-1 defeat at their ‘bogey’ side, Atletico Madrid. Aside from that though, they’ve swept aside the likes Sporting, Napoli, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund, which is an impressive list of victories.
Ronaldo and Benzema are expected to start again up front for the visitors, and even if Kane does start for Tottenham, I strongly suspect that the striker won’t play the full 90 minutes as Pochettino won’t want to risk further injury to his star player.
Real Madrid to at least avoid defeat looks a solid bet here.
