Tottenham will take on Southampton in the last of my previews for this Wednesday night’s instalment of the Premier league as the betting tips continue in the nation’s capital.
Tottenham were dealt a hammer blow by their North London rivals Arsenal in the recent local derby on Sunday as Spurs threw away a 2-1 lead to eventually end up losing 4-2 as Arsenal mounted an amazing comeback.
This defeat ended an impressive run of six wins on the trot in all competitions, but they return to Wembley to take on struggling Southampton who are without a win from their last 10 league matches.
Tottenham will no doubt be keen to bounce back with a win here but also improve upon a disappointing home record which currently stands at 3-0-2 8/5 having lost to Liverpool and Manchester City. Striker Kane (8 goals) is expected to put Southampton to the sword here, but Pochettino will be without defender Vertonghen who was sent off against Arsenal.
On the subject of throwing away leads, Southampton seemed to be heading for a rare victory under Mark Hughes when they found themselves 2-0 up against Manchester United, but as has so often been the case this season, Southampton folded and they had to make do with a point with a 2-2 draw.
A draw wasn’t enough to keep the Saints out of the bottom three though, and a tough match awaits them at Wembley against a Tottenham side smarting from their local derby loss to Arsenal. The visitors are without a win for 10 matches now, and another defeat here could seal Hughes’s fate having lost four of their last five on the road.
An away record of 1-1-5 6/16 includes recent defeats at Liverpool, Wolves, Manchester City and Fulham with Saints scoring 3 goals versus a total of 14 goals conceded.
