Tottenham – Can Conte get Spurs firing?

As managerial debuts go, Antonio Conte’s first league game in the Tottenham Hotspur dugout won’t live long in the memory. In fact, the only noteworthy takeaway from the goalless draw at Goodison Park against Everton was for something they didn’t do. Failing to produce a shot on target for the second league game running, having now gone three successive Premier League encounters without scoring.

Conte clearly has plenty of work to do on the training field, although a first clean sheet in eight league outings will have pleased a coach who takes pride in his teams being difficult to break down. However, that is now five times this season Spurs ended a top-flight fixture without scoring. The malaise further emphasised by the fact only bottom club Norwich (5) have scored fewer at this stage than their nine.

Harry Kane has cut a forlorn figure up top all too often this term. However, back-to-back hat-tricks for his country during the international break should be the shot in the arm the three-time Premier League Golden Boot winner desperately needed. Tottenham ran out 3-0 victors in this fixture last season, their fourth consecutive victory at home to Leeds in the competition, with Kane prising open the scoring.

Leeds – Raphinha reliance there for all to see?

Five points from the last nine on offer has elevated Marcelo Bielsa’s side, who marked their long-awaited return to England’s top tier by finishing in ninth place, into 15th. Three points clear of the bottom three. Yet it has still been a hugely frustrating start to the campaign for the 2019-20 EFL Championship winners, picking up two fewer wins while firing off five less goals than at this same juncture last time around.

Losing so many key players to various bumps and scrapes clearly hasn’t helped their cause thus far. No Leeds player scored more league goals last season than the 17 of Patrick Bamford, who has been unavailable for selection for much of the season. His continued absence places a heavier burden of responsibility on Raphinha to score their goals, and to the Brazilian’s credit he has delivered consistently.

With five goals so far, Raphinha accounts for 45 per cent of Leeds’ overall goal total. As good as he is, expect Bielsa’s opposite number to have something in mind for curtailing the impact of the former Rennes wideman. If so, the Whites may struggle for impetus in the final third of the pitch. They have scored no more than one goal in nine of eleven league games thus far (W2 D5 L4).

Tottenham Vs Leeds Betting Advice

With neither team averaging above a goal per game this season, Sunday’s encounter at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium could be defined in moments. Raphinha has shown his propensity for producing something out of nothing, but aside from the Brazilian Leeds have too often looked devoid of ideas with only five teams averaging less xGF through the first eleven games than Marcelo Bielsa’s outfit.

Tottenham Vs Leeds – Key Facts:

  • Not since February 2002 have Leeds won an away game in the Premier League against Tottenham, the latter winning each of the last four in North London including a 3-0 win in 2020-21.
  • Just three teams have scored fewer league goals this season than the 11 of Leeds. Among them, however, are Spurs, whose nine puts them above only bottom side Norwich.
  • Fresh from successive hat-tricks while on England duty recently, Harry Kane scored the first goal when Tottenham played host to Leeds last season.

Among that aforementioned five are Tottenham, who have amassed an inferior xGF total this season than all bar Norwich City and Newcastle – the current bottom two. It begs the question then how Both Teams to Score NO isn’t much shorter. Moreover, we’ve already seen Conte’s immediate desire to shore up this Tottenham side, meaning it is unlikely we will see them cut loose any time soon.
