English Premier League Betting at Betfair

Tottenham – No Jose or Kane for midweek?

Following Friday’s 2-2 draw with fellow top-four hopefuls Everton, this is now a must win game for Tottenham (W14 D8 L10) who could find themselves as many as seven points from the Champions League places by the time their match with Southampton gets underway. A worrying situation that required drastic action, at least according to the board, having dispensed with manager Jose Mourinho on Monday.

Mourinho departs with the team seventh in the Premier League. The Portuguese overseeing one win in his final five league games (D2 L2) – a 2-0 scoreline away to Aston Villa – but also that ignominious exit from the last-16 of the Europa League to Dinamo Zagreb. His last match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, however, being the 3-1 defeat to former employers Manchester United.

Chris Powell and former midfielder Ryan Mason will now take charge until the end of the season, including Sunday’s EFL Cup final against Man City. They may need to improvise without the club’s talisman, though. Harry Kane, scorer of both goals last time out to take his tally in the Premier League this season to 21, limped off with an ankle injury and seems unlikely to be risked for this with Sunday’s final in mind.

Danny Ings Anytime Goalscorer

Southampton – Ings can inspire sorry Saints?

Three days on from producing a surprisingly limp performance in the semi-finals of the FA Cup against Leicester City, the Saints return to Premier League action for a fixture that could further compound their misery. Southampton (W10 D6 L15) have lost eight of their last nine Premier League away games against Tottenham, including the last four in a row, with a 2-1 win in May 2016 the sole exception in this time.

The disappointment from losing at Wembley on Sunday will barely have subsided by the time Ralph Hasenhuttl and his team take to the field at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where striker Danny Ings boasts a 100% scoring record on his two visits so far. In fact, the former Burnley and Liverpool man has five goals in as many appearances versus Spurs as a Saints player, netting both in September’s 5-2 defeat at St Mary’s.

That one of 15 Premier League defeats sustained over the course of 2020-21. Eleven have come since the turn of the year, a period which has seen them collect only 10 of a possible 45 points (W2 D1 L11) – that the lowest return of any team in England’s top tier in 2021. Meanwhile, a 2-0 win over bottom club Sheffield United remains their only away win since December, losing seven of the last eight away fixtures.

Tottenham Vs Southampton Betting Advice

It is difficult to be enthusiastic about either team’s prospects in this contest. Having recently sacked their manager, and with Harry Kane considered a major doubt, Spurs look a team to avoid after one win in five Premier League games (D2 L2). Not that Southampton boast outstanding claims. The Saints have the worst record in the division in 2021, not to mention losing seven of their past eight away league games.

Tottenham Vs Southampton – Key Facts:

  • Southampton have only managed to avoid losing to Tottenham away from home in the Premier League in one of their last nine visits to North London.
  • On their previous five visits to Tottenham in all competitions, Southampton tasted defeat despite scoring at least once.
  • Both teams scored in five of Tottenham‘s past six Premier League games, and in three of Southampton‘s last four in the competition.

I believe goals could be the safest angle into this encounter. Only one of the previous 12 competitive matches between them didn’t produce both teams scoring, with their meeting last September ending 5-2 in favour of Spurs. That bet would have produced a winner in five of Spurs’ last six league games, and in all-but one of Southampton’s past four, with neither defence covering itself in glory lately.
