Preview: A place in Ligue 1 from next season is on the line at Stadium de Toulouse. Nantes are the team out to protect their top-flight status. However, Les Canaris’ record away to Thursday’s hosts is far from ideal, while Toulouse are on a long unbeaten run here in the south of France.

French Ligue 1 Betting at Betfair

Toulouse – Les Violets seeking swift redemption?

A season on from a last place finish in Ligue 1, in which they amassed a scarcely believable 13 out of a possible 84 points at the juncture when football in the country was prematurely curtailed, and Toulouse find themselves on the cusp of completing an immediate return. Les Violets finished this season third in Ligue 2, a couple points shy of Clermont and the automatic promotions berths.

Failure to win either of their final two league fixtures ultimately cost head coach Patrice Garande and his team a top two finish, and with it automatic promotion from Ligue 2. However, it will have been twelve days since that last encounter – a 3-3 draw away to USL Dunkerque, clawing back a 3-1 deficit courtesy of a hat-trick from former Cardiff City and MK Dons forward Rhys Healey.

Ample time, therefore, to shake off any lingering disappointment. So there can be no complaints regarding fatigue. Regardless Toulouse, who have not lost at Stadium de Toulouse in the league since November (W11 D2), will be emboldened by a run of ten wins in eleven at home – seven coming by way of a clean sheet – in which they averaged 2.6 goals per game, scoring two or more on eleven occasions.

Both Teams to Score 2 or More

Nantes – Les Canaris found their attacking swagger?

Although they closed out this season in blistering form, thus avoiding a bottom two finish that would have seen them automatically demoted, ultimately Nantes didn’t quite do enough to avoid relegation altogether. Consequently, Antoine Koumbouare’s charges must overcome Toulouse – a side they have beaten in five of the last six competitive meetings – to preserve their top-flight status.

Only one of these head to head triumphs was as the visiting side, though. Les Canaris boasting a solitary win across the seven (D4 L2) most recent trips to Stadium de Toulouse. However, much of their best work this term was generated on their travels. Of their nine victories in Ligue 1 in 2020/21, six were on the road, which includes the last three in a row against Brest (1-4), Dijon (0-4) and Strasbourg (1-2).

Perhaps the only unknown, therefore, will be the swift recovery required – mentally more than physically – following Sunday’s 2-1 loss at Montpellier which cost them safety when a point would have sufficed. However, as previously mentioned, Nantes were in a tremendous vein of form beforehand, netting 13 times in recording four successive wins – as many goals as they had managed in their 17 prior fixtures.

Toulouse Vs Nantes Betting Advice

One of the last five competitive meetings between these sides produced Both Teams to Score. That was the mose recent, however, in a 2-1 win for Nantes in December 2019. Meanwhile, three of the past eleven meetings – and none of the last seven held in Toulouse – saw three or more goals. Nevertheless, I am inclined to believe we could be in for a fair few goals in the south of France.

Toulouse Vs Nantes – Key Facts:

  • Nantes won five of the past seven competitive matches between these sides, however, Toulouse have only been beaten once in the last seven meetings as hosts (W2 D4).
  • Toulouse are currently enjoying a 13-game unbeaten home run in league competition (W11). Les Violets scored 2+ goals in 13 of 19 home matches in 2020/21.
  • Nantes had won each of their three prior away matches in Ligue 1, netting ten times in all, before last Sunday’s 2-1 loss at Montpellier.

Toulouse are in sensational form here at Stadium de Toulouse, where they’ve averaged more than two goals per game across the season so far and scored on at least two occasions in 11 of their past 13 Ligue 2 fixtures. However Nantes, too, are enjoying a rich vein of scoring form. Les Canaris can boast of 14 goals in their last 5 matches, with ten coming from their past three away outings.
