Udinese Preview – Can hosts arrest recent slide in results at home?

Some wretched form in the middle of last season did see Udinese fall into the relegation conversation, only for the team to turn it all around after the restart. When football in Italy did finally resume, Le Zebrette were winless in Serie A in their past seven encounters, which very quickly became nine, before a run of five wins from their final ten matches (W5 D2 L3) quelled any lingering anxiety.

As impressive as their recovery towards the end of the previous Serie A term was, this was a streaky Udinese team in 2019/20. A team equally capable of following up a loss with another as they were to produce a victory from seemingly out of nowhere. For this reason, predicting what they will do next, after losing their opening encounter 1-0 away to Hellas Verona, is far from straightforward.

Yet the performance at the weekend was actually encouraging. They were by far the better team, according to Expected Goals (xG: VER 0.75 – 2.37 UDI), and were largely undone by their own profligacy in front of goal. However, it does mean a return to their Stadio Fruili, where they ended last season with one win in nine (against Juventus, ironically), on something of a dampener.

Spezia Preview – Another bold showing expected from Serie A newcomers?

If the enormity of a maiden campaign in Serie A, and with it trying to remain in the division at the first attempt, wasn’t already apparent, then it certainly would have been come the end of Sunday’s brutal introduction. Spezia, who needed the play-offs to secure the club its first ever promotion into the Italian top-tier, were comprehensively beaten first time out by a rampant Sassuolo.

The scoreline at the Dino Manuzzi, the home ground for Spezia, was harsh. But you invariably get punished for giving up a gluttony of goalscoring chances, as they did on Sunday (xG: SPE 1.54 – 2.48 SAS). Vincenzo Italiano’s men weren’t exactly overawed, though, carving out several decent opportunities of their own. Enough to suggest last season’s third-highest scorers in Serie B (54 in 38 games) can pose defences at this level problems.

In Serie B last term, only four sides – two of whom, Benevento and Crotone, were promoted along with them – collected more points from away fixtures than the Little Eagles (Aquilotti). They ended the season in splendid form on their travels too, winning three and losing one of their final five away matches to help secure a third-place finish, and with it, crucially, the top seed for the subsequent play-offs.

Udinese Vs Spezia Betting Advice

For all their experience, with this their 26th-consecutive term in Serie A, Udinese have seldom been anything more than a mid-table outfit. Last season was no different, and had it not been for some improved performances post-lockdown, a relegation battle might have ensued. So the hosts, who have only one win at their Stadio Fruili in the last nine, are uneasy favourites despite facing Serie A newcomers Spezia.

Udinese Vs Spezia – Key Facts

  • Only relegated SPAL managed less goals from matches played at home in Serie A last season than Udinese (18 scored in 19 such fixtures).
  • En route to a third place finish and promotion from Serie B, Spezia would register more away points (27 – W7 D6 L6) than all but four out of the 20 teams in the competition.
  • These clubs are meeting for only the second time. Spezia prevailing 3-2 inside Udinese’s Stadio Fruili in a 2016 Coppa Italia encounter.

Only relegated SPAL plundered fewer goals at home than Udinese last season. They were wasteful in front of goal on Saturday, too. This profligacy could work in Spezia’s favour. The latter were the fifth-best away side in Serie B last term and finished it by recording three wins in their final five said matches. Sassuolo may have put them to the sword on Sunday but the scoreline wasn’t a true reflection on proceedings. 1-1 Draw.
